Large 4x4s 'impossible to part-ex'

  • No demand for petrol off-roaders
  • Re-sale values plummet
  • Difficult times for 4x4 dealers

Owners of large petrol 4x4s could find themselves stuck with their cars when they come to change it as dealers steer clear of thirsty off-roaders.

Parker’s has learned from trade insiders that there is currently no demand among used car buyers for large petrol-powered off-roaders, particularly those with big V8 engines, and dealers are far less likely to take them in part exchange.

Our source confirmed stories of number of individual customers unable to part exchange a large petrol 4x4 for their next car.

He said no matter how cheap the car, it is not worth dealers accepting these very thirsty 4x4s, which are in danger of sitting on the forecourt for months depreciating further.

And that even if a dealer offered ‘bottom book’ price for the car and sent it to auction, there would be no guarantee it would sell.

Causes

Increasing fuel prices and the prospect of owners being liable for double the amount of road tax on certain high fuel consumption models has meant used car buyers have been more wary before deciding on their next purchase.

Recent fuel price rises and changes to road tax rules could have made owners of big 4x4s keener to try to change their cars.

But there is no appetite at present for thirsty 4x4s that would typically cost £100 or more to fill up with petrol as fuel prices continue to soar, and become liable for more than £450 a year in vehicle excise duty by 2010 for models currently two years old.

Drivers hoping to part exchange these models could be forced to sell their cars privately before they can buy a replacement.

Tough times

Andrew Harrison-Smith, owner of Peterborough-based independent Land Rover specialist Nene Overland, said the whole 4x4 market was facing a difficult time, but warned that depreciation is currently very heavy on large petrol 4x4s.

However, he said owners and buyers could be hit less hard if they consider converting large petrol Land Rovers and Jeeps to run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

‘Values for big petrol engined 4x4s are about £3000 or perhaps even £4000 lower than for the diesels,’ he told Parker’s.

‘If people chose a petrol 4x4 and spent £1500-£2000 on converting it to LPG they would be able to run it more cheaply. If it’s a clean car it should sell for the same or slightly higher than the trade guides suggest for the standard petrol model.’

The association representing franchised dealers confirmed large off roaders presented sales staff with a big challenge, but claimed there wasn’t a blanket policy to refuse petrol 4x4s as part exchanges.

Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealer Association, told Parker's: ‘The market for 4x4s has become tougher following the Government's announcement in the budget of revised VED rates for higher polluting cars.

‘This has had an impact on values of these vehicles, which has meant that all dealers have had to review their stocking policies to make sure they are holding the right stock of vehicles to sell.

‘This may mean from time to time that they are less inclined to take certain vehicles in certain circumstances.

‘This is not a new practice, it is something that has ocurred for many years as dealers endeavour to hold their optimum stock profile.’

 Advice

Private sale

If you sell your car privately, it will be worth ensuring it has had a recent service and has a long MoT where applicable to ensure potential buyers feel reassured.

If there are any small dents in the bodywork or chips in the paint you could maximise the car’s value by employing the services of a technician from a ‘smart’ repair company (smart in this case stands for small to medium area repair technique). Spending a couple of hundred pounds could make that much again in selling a car that looks pristine.

Spend money on a valet before the car is viewed and choose the conditions and location carefully if you are photographing the car for an advert – bright, sunny days are best, as long as you have the sun behind you. Park the car at an angle for the main picture showing the front three-quarters.

LPG conversion

Many petrol 4x4 owners choose to have the car converted to run on both LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and petrol. LPG is about half the price of unleaded petrol and is available from about 1300 filling stations in the UK.

If you’re a high mileage driver, it won’t take long to recoup the cost of the conversion, which is typically about £2000.

However, it isn’t a simple matter of adding a tank and a fuel line: certain engine components must be changed, so find a LP Gas Association approved converter to carry out the work (see here).

The benefit of having an LPG tank in addition to the petrol tank means there is always petrol to fall back on if the LPG runs out before you find a garage.

If you plan to cross the channel, Euro-tunnel does not allow LPG converted vehicles to cross, so you would have to use a ferry.

I panicked about road tax and sold my beloved Landrover Defender 3 years ago. I regret it on a daily basis and curse the government that seems to have no coherent transport policy. I still needed a 4x4 so bought a 2 litre Suzuki Grand Vitara petrol. There has been much rubbishing of this vehicle but I suspect the criticism is levelled at the Diesel [Renault] version. The Suzuki petrol engine version is brilliant. It is very versatile on or off road very reliable & great value I recommend them.

I bought a Santa Fe in the summer, I wanted 7 seats what swung me was it only put out 191gm carbon compared to the Volvo and Landrover. It does 39mpg on a long run (to Germany) and 30mpg around town. Before you say it will drop like a stone because its korean. Don't care 5 year warranty, excellent family car, if it worth zero at the end is money well spent. ps. it has a superb desiel engine better than my bmw (07 model) - running cost not much different than the 2.0 petrol mondeo estate repla

As yet, I don't have a 4x4,but it is immanent.Having studied both new & used, diesel & petrol,I can tell you there is nothing down for diesel.I will buy either a used Mitsubishi Shogun Elegance(2002-06)or the current Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7.Both are bullet proof and the Hyundai gives better MPG, plus all the upto date goodies. I tow a 24ft 6in twin axle caravan with a 1997 Volvo T5 CD Auto,21mpg towing,25/32 solo.If you need a larger engine, can't afford two vehicles then you have to think best value

So would the Goverment be happy if we all bought low emission cars and they didn't get any road tax? Would they nelly!! It's a STEALTH TAX! Anyway, thanks Labour for stitching me up with a £400 a year road tax. I thought I'll be a good boy and sell it and get a 'greener' car, guess what, they don't want your car in part ex! So what do I do Gordon?

Purchased BMW X5 3.0d (diesel) in March 2008 for £18.5k, decided to sell now due to 4x4 prices in freefall. Sold car fairly easily but could only get £14.3k.

Decision to downgrade as we have a BMW 530d touring as well, would like to have kept both but concerned about depreciation, road tax and fuel prices. Bought a 120d BMW !! This Government has a lot to answer for, we could not afford a new X5 one so bought used. Those that can afford new wont really be affected. Aspiration is dead!

Hmm - was going to trade in my 55 plate petrol Honda CRV but got offered £6k trade in. It does 30mpg and when I bought it I purposely decided not to buy the diesel as the mileage I do (approx 10k a year) did not warrant the extra cost. Why should I pay a high road tax for a car that does little mileage while a small diesel car that maybe does 30k miles a year pays less. Get rid of road tax competely and add it on to the fuel tax. Have less economical car = use more fuel = pay more tax....

I have a 2.5 nissan X trail - bought it a year ago for a reasonable 6500. Probably wouldnt be able to shift it now for 4k. Panicked at first when I saw the new VED band and wanted to sell. Thought about it, if I lost at least £2500 in a year why not keep it for next ten years - extra 220 quid a year (will be £430) thats £2200 - worth keeping it and shoving middle finger up at the idiots who decided on this new VED banding. Would loose more selling - do the maths before making snap decision!

A couple of things........

Firstly, to the person who say's what do you need a 4x4 to travel with a caravan for..A couple of answers..What do you need an aeroplane to travel for... also when I plod ticking over up steep hills towing my 1.5t caravan with my Hyundai lean burn engine (economical 36mpg 2.9litre)I watch new diesel cars strugling up the same hills ploughing smelly fumes out of their exhausts reving in a high gear all the way up buring more fuel than me

I totally agree if it was put on new cars, people who already own large vehicles would have a choice, but as it stands we have to keep our vehicles due to price depreciation and we end up being the only loosers why from 2001, in todays standards that an old car. they need to put this tax on all new vehicles.

I am in favour of putting up the tax duty on new cars but this government has just decided to move the goal posts for older vehicles after people have spent thousands purchasing a car they thought they could afford to tax each year. Tax increases in line with inflation are acceptable to all, but to adjust tax brackets after vehicles have been bought (post 2001) is totally out of order. As usual, middle income earners will pay the price for this badly thought out change.

I don't dispute the issues around emissions etc and clearly larger vehicles (probably but not exclusively 4X4's) are going to be the worst performers. However I have a problem with the way government has approached and dealt with this issue. The proportion of global emissions produced by UK 4X4's is a drop in the ocean. Even if you took every 4X4 off UK road's that wouldn't have a significant effect on the future of the planet. Government policy is out of all proportion to the problem

Although I have sympathy for people who genuinely need a 4x4 in rural areas, the positive effect of there being less 4x4s on the road is more chance for survival for other normal car drivers and passengers in any road accidents. Safety for the masses overides the cost to the few.

Can someone explain why you need a 4x4 to tow a caravan, wont a good sized diesel car (estate or MPV) do the job?

This legislation to tax existing vehicles is nothing to do with the environment. The emissions of a 4x4 when parked is just the same supermini. It only becomes thirstier when you put highly taxed fuel in it and drive it.

Also, rough estimate, a vehicle that does 15mpg uses twice the fuel(twice the CO2) that a car that does 30mpg uses. Yet the difference in tax is negilgeable.

A vehicle that does 45mpg though is much cheaper to tax than a 30mpg one yet saves much less fuel than above.

Had to sell my Freelander TD4 , as in the near future , it would have zero value , and then l would have no choice but to pay this Unfair road tax increase, how can the goverment backdate a tax , this on a car that was built 7 years ago.I could understand more if it applied to all new cars , then people could make a informed choice.
The freelander was not a gasguzzler , it averaged 36mpg, but built with 2001 technology.

Appreciate comments about the enviroment but lets remember that we are all responsible and all need to do our bit. 4x4 owners are too easily targeted, blamed and fair game it seems when it comes to criticising them for polluting the enviroment.

I'm sure there are many people who dont have a 4x4 but have an annual family holiday abroad - I take it they aren't polluting the enviroment????

What did everyone do back in the days before 4x4s and 'people carriers' became popular... We all seemed to manage with 'normal family cars'. High polluters are feeling the pinch, but this has all been on the cards since 2000 when the environment and emmissions became big news and petrol prices started escalating big-time. If you bought a non-environmentally friendly vehicle then you've only got yourself to blame, so tough!

purchased a shogun in December as we had an accident in our older car, we had to purchase such a large vehicle to tow our caravan. we had to recentley sell the caravan due to finances and we were looking to down size the shogun as we no longer need it. we paid £9995 for it a few months ago, how now are we able to replace this vehicle, we will never get a decent price, and cant afford to keep it, we are a large family and need a seven seater, they are crippling families.
