Top safety ratings for family cars

Some of the UK's most popular cars are the latest to go through the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The five models, which include the new Vauxhall Insignia, the replacement for the Vectra, and latest version of the Volkswagen Golf, all received five stars in the adult occupant protection part of the safety tests.

Renault Megane’s reputation for safety continued, as this latest model scored a maximum marks of 37 points and four stars for child safety. This follows on from the previous model that was also given a five star rating.

The other family cars to receive top marks in the tests were the Honda Accord and Peugeot 308 CC. As well as these, the new Ford Fiesta, Alfa Romeo MiTo and Volvo XC60 were all given a five star rating.

However this set of safety ratings will be the last that will be based on the current rating system, as Euro NCAP launches its new programme of combined safety ratings starting from February 2009.

From this date onwards, cars will be awarded an overall score out of five stars, based on the outcome of safety tests for the protection of adult occupants, child occupants and pedestrians, plus a new category called safety assist.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary general of Euro NCAP said: "It is clear that Euro NCAP's new rating scheme will offer a more discriminating view of the overall safety of todays best selling vehicles and give customers the opportunity to prioritise and maximise the safety options on their vehicles."

Its a fallacy 'safer cars', there's no such thing, its only as safe as the way you drive! I speak from a personal experience basis the car I was driving and its Euroncap safety rating, I should be dead! In an accident there are 3 collisions; vehicle to vehicle or object; human body with restraints/airbags; human organs like brain (think yolk of an egg) colliding with the sharp/rugged frontal inner skull! We NEED BETTER Drivers, not safer cars!
