Toyota recalls Prius for brake problem

  • Faulty brakes to blame for latest recall
  • Up to 8500 cars affected in the UK
  • But manufacturer says cars still safe to drive

Around 8500 Prius models are set to be recalled in the UK because of a braking problem.

Toyota says the problem is 'inconsistent brake feel' during slow and steady braking on bumpy or slippery road surfaces when the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is activated.

The problem was first reported in Japan and America but the manufacturer says there have been no reported incidents relating to the issue in Europe.

This latest safety issue affects the latest generation of Prius models built before 27 January 2010.

The brand says that until customers get the problem fixed, the car is still safe to drive and at no time will drivers be without brakes.

The recall will involve a software upgrade to the ABS system. This will be free of charge and should take around 40 minutes. All work will be carried out by authorised Toyota service centres.

The Prius issue comes after the Japanese carmaker issued a recall on eight different models - although this has been cut to seven - for having faulty accelerator pedals. For the latest on Toyota recalls go here.
