New road tax powers for the DVLA

The DVLA has gained extra powers to track down road tax dodgers.

The Government authority was handed more clout under a legislative shake-up, meaning officers can now take action against untaxed vehicles parked off the public road, such as in council-owned car parks. Previously, it could only clamp or remove cars on public roads.

Legal loophole

This prevents owners from evading the DVLA by using a loophole in the law and parking their untaxed cars in off-road safety havens. Research in 2005 estimated that there were around 150,000 offenders in local authority car parks.

However the new powers do not include private driveways or car dealers' forecourts.

Owners of untaxed vehicles, whether parked on or off public roads, must declare it if their car is out of use to the Government agency and have a Statutory Off Road Notification in place. This can be done online, by phone, at a Post Office or when applying for a tax refund.

Most people don't pay their car tax disk because they forget. Clamping is the repressive answer of a society on its way to state terrorism and totalitarianism. The DVLA is a bunch of self-righteous people who make me want to vomit. They hire crooks as contractors to clamp cars. They should be behind bars.

I honestly feel that this is daylight robbery. Before buying my audi TT. When I last checked the tax banding would only effect cars manufactured upto the 31/3/01..could someone explain why this has now changed???

Maybe if they got together with the government and sorted out the out of control tax prices you wont find untaxed vehicless driving around. It might be that at least half the people that dont tax thier vehicles dont just do it to get one over the law but they might not be able to afford to tax it. With the expense of driving being so high now it does make is difficult to keep on top of all the bills having a vehicle brings to your doormat. MAKE TAX AFFORDABLE TO ALL BUT MAKE THE FINES HIGHER
