The cars that cost nothing to tax

1. Honda Insight  (00-05)

Parker's says: The pioneering Insight was Honda's first petrol-electric engine 'hybrid' - a car with both a petrol engine and electric motor. It may be quirky to look at, and it only seats two, but there's strong demand among buyers for it and as a result used values remain surprisingly high. Although launched in 2000, it's only those registered from March 2001 that qualify from free Road Tax...

2. Toyota IQ (09 on)*

Parker's says: Toyota's stylish iQ is a low-cost, high-quality city car with a difference: it's the smallest four seater in the UK. But despite being less than three metres long, it's brimming with space-saving tricks and the cabin is deceptively roomy - particularly for front passengers...

5. Smart Fortwo Coupe (08 on)

Kia Picanto (04 on) review

Parker's says: The latest Fortwo is a little larger, more practical and more comfortable than before with better refinement and an improved gearchange. It is still at home in urban environments where it is very easy to drive, but now it is also easier to live with on the motorway too. Diesel versions are free to tax, others are £35...

keep the tax disc rather than put the price up yet again. im already paying £5000 a year in fuel!!! im in my mid 20's. the price of fuel is enough already without it being put up any more. im sure if you all got out of your houses and actually had to go somewhere or have a loved one living away then you too wouldnt want any more tax on fuel. To the guy who is paying £145 to use his rover 3 times a month just get rid of your car catch the bus save yourself a fortune.

I think it's about time the scrapped road tax too, without increasing the cost of fuel duty! We're already paying more for fuel than most european countries pay, and their road tax is already included.

It's disgusting the way this countries government treat its road users. If they want to get more money to spend on the country and it's rehabilitation, they need to look closer to home, or in most cases paying for the politition's 2nd homes!!

I have a Sept09 TDi Skoda. It is too new (by one month) to qualify for scrappage and too old to qualify for cheap road tax even though it has the same emmissions as newer models. It's a perfectly good car but from April it will cost £85-00 more to tax than a two year newer model. Yet again lower earners pay the most, I can't afford a newer car.

Scrap the tax disc now and put the tax onto petrol? So in 5 or 10 years time someone in government can come up with a good idea of a yearly charge to use your vehicle on the road and a paper disc in your windscreen to prove you have paid it, and as for MORE tax on petrol - don't you think we already pay enough tax on petrol - at 65% of the forecourt price being tax and duty (duty is added to the price of petrol and then we are taxed on it as well - double taxation???) I think it is a joke.

It's time to get rid of the Tax Disc, As the only fair system is Pay for what you use,Increase fuel costs, (No Tax dodging) I have 4 Classic Cars none of which do more than a 1,000 a year, But I still have to pay £190.00 per car a year for Tax. Thats £760.00 for less than 4,000 mls of Road use, A another example of Rip Off Government.

I drive a '94 Rover Metro which has been converted to battery power. I don't pay road tax on it.

I believe all electric vehicles, both new and retrofit are currently road tax exempt.

My camper van may not be as ecological as modern cars, but the way it was made is way more ecological than the new cars made now. How many cars do you know that can last 30 odd years. You could also become disabled to get free road tax!! Join the revolution lol and drive a camper.

What about the pre 1972 cars that have free road tax?
Much more inspiring than this lot!

How about a Rover P5B with the 3.5 litre V8 and free road tax?

Or a VW Camper van?

Ecology or what? Use a re-cycled car and save the environment
