Road Tax and the cost of fuel WILL be issues at the next election

  • Fuel bills and Road Tax costs could swing votes
  • 84% say Road Tax will be a factor when they vote
  • 86% will be influenced by the cost of fuel

Readers of Parker's are concerned about the cost of Road Tax and fuel and are willing to switch their vote to a party that will cut them - according to an exclusive survey.

Published on the day of the Pre-Budget Report, it shows that 84 per cent of people intend to vote differently as a result of the forthcoming changes to Road Tax, while 86 per cent said that the cost of diesel and petrol would be a factor when it came to the next general election.

In total more than three quarters of Parker’s users said that they wanted to see something done about the price of fuel and road tax. Although petrol prices have fallen by more than two thirds since the Summer and the Government has frozen fuel duty, there have been calls by some for further action.

'Delayed death sentence'

Conservative MP Justine Greening said: “The retrospective Road Tax rises need to be ditched completely, not just frozen. This is more than just a time issue, the costs will still go up in 2010 and the freeze is nothing but a delayed death sentence.”

“I think the Government also need to take a careful look at the price of fuel duty. Although the price of petrol has come down, it will eventually rise again. They need to stop with the ‘will they, won’t they’, like the stamp duty debacle this summer, and implement an automatic stabiliser when it comes to the price of fuel duty.

As well as Parker’s users and Miss Greening, the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are also looking for more than just a delay in VED prices. They sent a joint letter to Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, calling for more support for the motor industry including scrapping plans for increased VED and a new First Year Rate.

Green taxes

Despite the push by the Government on green issues, including the retrospective road tax prices, just 44 per cent of users were actually thinking of their affect on the environment when looking to buy a new car. Only one in three said that they would be looking to buy a car with low CO2 emissions and while just 4 per cent would be looking buying a hybrid car.

“For a green tax to work, we need to look at a gradual VED as it is not encouraging people to buy a better new car. There need to be tax reductions elsewhere. The road tax is actually not good on the environment as it means that people who own the most polluting cars can’t actually trade them in so are having to keep hold of them.” She added.

I don't think it matters which party gets in at the next election-they'll both put tax up for the higher bands, because whoever gets in will need the tax revenue to balance the books after spending so much on greedy bankers who would have taken us all down with them.

No-one wants to put up income tax so they have to look at other taxes. Cameron is always trumpeting how green he is, so he's as likely as Brown to put up tax on the higher emission cars.

That's why my next car will be diesel!

Put road tax on petrol.
You then pay for what you use, what you drive and how you drive it. The pumps would then incentivise or penalise. There would be a reduction in tax dodging; and administration costs. Just think of the tax saving in this alone. The complexity, inefficiency and unfairness of this current cobbled together road tax will cause confusion and anger for years to come. My Car will cost over £450 to tax within the next year or so + if I decided to get a new one - I would have to pay a "First year" tax of £950! - I WILL NOT be voting for labour for this reason!

When will this government realise that we can all see that these are stealth taxes nothing more nothing less. They have no relationship with the environment what so ever, if they did, they would apply them to fuel and do away with VED! And yes, they will be vote deciders, but I believe Gordon and his friend far outstayed there welcome at No. 10! and the voters will prove that come election time.... Goodbye Mr Brown, FOREVER!!!

2 years ago you got 40% more euros for your £ and at that time in France diesel was considerably cheaper than in the UK and substantially cheaper than petrol.

During February I was in France again and we now have £1 = 1 euro but in France diesel is still cheaper than in the UK and around 10p cheaper than petrol/ litre.

Fuel and road tax issues could be a problem for the government come election time.

It strikes me that FUEL IS ON THE INCREASE AGAIN.My local Shell Station has progressively increased unleaded from 84.9p to the present price of 88.9p.I believed the extra fuel Fuel Duty that was to be applied was a lesser figure than would appear to be the case and ontop of all that the reduction in the VAT of 2.5% would have produced a very small increase in fuel prices(petrol)Diesel is even more out of step.WHAT THE HELL IS IT ALL ABOUT AL'(DARLING)?.Is it that the warmer weather is on the way

Dont let this Govt have you believe their incredible rise in car tax is anything to do with 'green issues' and our 'carbon footprint'. It is all about this Labour Govt filling their pockets under the 'guise of being Green. The hard-working tax payer is once again forced to pay up! I have seen my car tax jump by £100 in a year! That's a 40% increase and we just have to accept it? Lets vote down this greedy party and aspire to some common sense governing

Again Labour shows contempt to those on lower wages. I am sure it pollutes the atmosphere more jetting around as this government does.
Road tax was always for the roads now let’s put it back where it belongs and improve our roads. Let’s not allow those in power to line their pockets with more of our hard earned cash.
As for new car Labour has made sure I can never afford one. Well done Labour the plan to force congestion charge on those living in Manchester failed we have woken up. Bye labour.

Any info would be grateful. My partner and I are looking to purchase a used Touareg only a few years old, on this website it says that it will be in band F then K which is £245 for tax, on other websites it is showing that the tax will be in the £400's or just below, any ideas which is right as I dont want to be paying that much on tax, it is the 3.2 v6 5dr model we're looking at. I also will be swaying my vote to whichever party will lower road tax

Green taxes are a joke. I have just returned from China, where I have seen 16 lane motorways under construction. Whilst we are deluding ourselves we are saving the planet, they will be laughing in their SUV's.

Also it is a bit rich that this moronic government has highly taxed 4-wheel drive and luxury cars. This has crushed demand at Land Rover and Jaguar and they are planning to pour millions of our tax money in to save them. Doh!

I've been driving for thirty something years now and I'm watching all the transport minsters saying one thing or other about road tax, yet they drive about in big Jaguars [no offence against Jaguar good car] but they eat the fuel like it's going out of fashion then you have the big Range rover that do about 10 to the gallon the 4.5 version now they are the once that should be tax heavely, and what do they do with the money they put some where else away from the transport needs.

I find it ridiculous that they should tax cars differently. you pay enough tax on petrol as it is, so if you car uses more petrol you are already paying more TAX for them to put an even higher tax on it is just slapping you in the face.
I'm not a supporter of these 'greener cars for one reason 'we are going to use all the oil up one way or another 10 to 20 years later will make no difference to the planet i say get your monies worth and burn it off it style then switch to hydrogen fuel cells.

I always thought road tax (Road fund licence?)was supposed to fund the maintenance and provision of roads. Using it as a 'green' tax in my view just means I have infinitely more right to the road than someone in a Prius (which I assume is tax exempt). It does make me wonder about buying a pre 2001 mustang or something wiht a V8 from the 70's just to help reinforce how ridiculous it is. Just another way for Labour to screw more from the motorist.

I hate the way the government keep moving the goalposts.
I ran a honda accord type v coupe 2.0 vtec(petrol)Lovely car, but at 80mph the vtec cut in giving you 31 mpg .At 78mph you got 43mpg!!
So I bought a volvo diesel s60 2.4d5se(163).With my cruise locked on 75 mph it constantly returns 56 mpg so its hardly a gas guzzler is it?! So now the government rob us with co2 emissions instead .My last co2 test was almost down to the group below(1% out) but your VED doesnt drop accordingly does it?

You do not have to have spent £30 - £40k on a car to be hit with the £400 road tax !
This has put thousands of people who are now trying to swap to a "greener" car in a big black hole, being offered ridiculous prices to part ex loosing thousands on their cars value due to this new road tax system, this is the reason car dealers are reluctant to part ex them, i think the government should put something in place to stop the dealers ripping off the working class people facing this situation

This is a tax on the poor, If your fortunate enough to be able to spend £30- £40,000 plus for a vehicle, I dont think your going to be bothered about £400 plus for road tax. Its the low paid mr average who will suffer, people who want a larger car be it for safety or comfort or whatever wont be able to run one, or if you have one sell it. We pay to run Mr Browns cars and pay his cronies taxi fares so it wont affect them either.

I would just like to point out that diesel cars do not give out CO2. So how can the govenment decide how much tax you pay according to your car emmisions. Why don,t they chose someone who knows what there on about.

I agree completely. I've only been driving since march this year, and have already seen my fuel costs go up 15%, despite moving to an area of the Uk where fuel is cheaper!
Road tax is rediculous to, espechially on larger cars. I mean take for example the car I own . The Nissan Syline R33 GTS-T. Its value is now less than half what I paid for it only 18months ago, purely because of the running costs!

Road tax and fuel costs are a big concern to me. I will admit i voted these "idiots" into power and for that i apologise. I can, however, promise that my next vote will not be wasted on labour. They have done nothing but mess up our economy. These so called "green" taxes have just ruined the resale value of more polluting cars. I think i'll keep hold of my 2.3 V5 as it makes more financial sense to keep it rather than change it for a greener car now thank you very much labour.
