Learners set to face 'green' driving test

  • Learners now tested on eco-driving
  • DFT reveals greener driving can save £££s
  • New rules mean that learner drivers must now learn to drive economically and could face failing their test in future if they fail to do so.

The Government has now introduced eco-friendly and fuel-efficient driving elements to the practical test, where learners will be advised on how to drive in a way that cuts CO2 emissions and saves money.

    Greener driving saves £££s

According to the Department for Transport (DFT), a month’s worth of fuel can be saved per year if it’s ‘smarter driving techniques’ are followed, and three months worth of fuel can be saved if drivers choose a more fuel efficient model when buying a new car.

Transport Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, claims that these techniques can “help the next generation of motorists drive in a way that is better for their wallets and the environment.”

Green driving as a failure mark

Currently, learners cannot pass or fail on the new greener driving section of the test, though the examiner will indicate to the candidate whether they’ve successfully driven economically at the end of the test.

However, Colin O’Connell, Chief Examiner for Driving Instructors Association (DIA), said that greener driving for learners “is necessary and will have a great effect on eco-driving and forward observation.”

The DIA also told Parker’s that eco-driving is likely to become a failure mark in the future, where learners will be tested on their use of the gears, accelerator and brakes.

The DFT’s ACT ON CO2 campaign advises motorists to follow its ‘smarter driving tips’ to reduce fuel consumption.

These include keeping tyres inflated, reducing unnecessary weight, driving at appropriate speeds and changing up a gear earlier.

In response to the posting by Maz.A contact at Shell,Stanlow told me that diesel is not cheap to refine, nor is it likely to be.The requirement to meet ever increasing demands from Europe, currently Euro IV emissions is costing heavily.Diesel carries the bulk of the cost, petrol is a by-product.Yes particulates are nasties, that is why we now are hearing of diesel particulate filters. They recycle the fumes and remove more of the soot.Another expensive "go wrong"to replace.Petrol is clean & cheap.

I am beginning to wonder whether the decrease in fuel at the pumps is because of a large reduction in fuel duty. One that the government will not admit to!!.How else could such a low profit product(as we are told)be reduced by such a large amount??.Yes the price of crude has fallen but surely not enough to bring about the pump prices we see at present. We were kidded into investing in diesel vehicles, look what happened. Will we rush out again and replace our ageing vehicles with petrol driven ones.

The cost of diesel. When I bought my first diesel car, I did so because i was informed it was cleaner for the for our air and it was cost effective what a lot or nonsense. Now we are told its worse than petrol. Its 12p more expensive and they do not do a lot more miles to the gallon than most other modern petrol driven cars. I have done my comparrisons and petrol engine is cheaper by far I wiil never believe the government again

worse still is the fact that contrary to popular beleif deisel as a fuel is more harmful to the 'environment' in comparison to a more refined unleaded fuel, contrary to what co2 figures suggest, something to do with soot emitted from diesels and the re-absorbtion of co2 into the envoronment.
although i do agree that diesel is a cheaper fuel to produce and prices at the pump should reflect this, that said though more miles per gallon can be achieved by a diesel powered car so prices do seem fair

Have you noticed how the price of diesel has increased so much over petrol while being a cheaper fuel to produce and how diesel engines do greater a mpg. It's all happened since the popularity of diesel engines increased in private cars probably outnumbering petrol engined cars. Again it's another rip off diesel has become more popular so hike up the fuel duty, look at other countries, nearly all cheaper than ion the rip off UK

Is it me or have you all noticed that if you are a respocible person and switch to a diesel car for economy or if you go for a night out and you are the driver YOU get clobbard with expensive Diesel that does not drop in price the same amount as petrol eventhough it is cheaper to make ! and soft drinks cost more than alcoholic drinks BUT the soft drinks do not attract TAX in the same way. IT is totally iresponcible of pubs and breweries to put temptation the drivers way because of this expence.

There needs to be an government inquiry NOW!!! not next week NOW every hour they are raking it in!!!!

Petrol prices may be dropping but why is Diesel up to 20p per litre dearer than Petrol, is there more tax on it or is it dearer to produce??? As most of the goods in our shops today are delivered by road I would have thought having lower Diesel costs would bring the cost of goods down and therefore help out the working family.

Fuel prices are still dropping which is great news. Fuel isn't exactly "cheap" or "value" or any other words to that effect. Truth is fuel is still dearer than last year and previous years, yet oil is at a record low. When will we get the TRUE savings passed on.

And all this "spend £50 save 5p off fuel" is just another con. I mean food is so expensive in some places now that it simply isn't worth spending the £50. For me if i spent £50 a week in store, i would only save about £1 at the pump.

If fuel is coming down, so it costs less to deliver the food, so prices should come down - but they are still going up - Supermarket Greed - they get it back one way or the other!

I've stopped buying my petrol at Tesco and got myself an ASDA credit card, so now pay Asda price less 2p per litre, a better deal than 1 point per pound at Tesco!

Steve of Stoke. OPEC meeting failed to stabilise barrel of oil price and indeed it fell further after the news. So the latest cut in production will not 'fuel' an increase in your petrol/diesel prices. The continuing strength of the dollar might however.

Ultimately OPEC only control ~50% of world production, so they are treading a tightrope at the minute. If oil stabilises at $70/barrel (today $64) they will be happy with production levels officially set. At this price you'll see 89.9p soon.

Looks like we are not going to have lower prices for much longer, now that OPEC have decided to cut oil production right back to force prices back up again. Petrol back up to £1.20 a litre within a few weeks, so make the most of 95p per litre, because it wont last long.
Don't forget as well, good old Gordy has postponed his fuel tax hikes for the last few budgets, so he might see this as being the time to slap on 2 - 4p per litre tax rises.

I think it's easy to target the supermarkets when in fact the majority of the cost of petrol is charged by the government in taxation.

The price of petrol does follow the price of oil on the open market but it takes 4-6 weeks for price rises and reductions to filter through. If you watch the wholesale price as it rises when OPEC reduces production, you will see that the pump price takes about four weeks to move up.

Some time ago I noticed that the price of diesel at my local Tesco's was higher than at Tesco stores 20 miles away in Perth; I contacted Tesco about this and got a lot of nonsense about the extra costs of delivery. Really? Another 20 miles meant 1 or 2 pence extra a litre? The bottom line is that because there is no competition locally Tesco believe they can charge higher prices for petrol as well as for many groceries instore. The price of fuel bears very little if any relation to the cost of getting the fuel to the filling station. The discrepancies are purely down to local competition, ie if there are no local competitors you'll be ripped off.

Equally price of oil can drive fuel prices up, but it tends to be on a 'ratchet system', whereby as the price of oil drops, this will not be relected in the price a the pumps, certainly not as quickly, and not proportionately.

I totally disagree with Asda's comments that fuel prices across the country should be fixed. If you live in a region where the cost of getting fuel transported to you is more expensive then you should pay the price for it, and not expect the rest of us to subsidise you! Its the only way to go forward as it reflects the true price/cost of fuel. If people don't like it they should move somewhere more central.
