Posted - 14 November 2006 : 18:55:32 sophieamelia is definitely going on the '07 Mongol Rally. A number of our esteemed members have already offered help (and money!) and I know that TP and VFC are advising her on the on road driving aspect.
We are going to be preparing the car down here (definitely a LHD) but choice not yet finally made. It will have to survive about 15,000 kms of pretty rough roads.
If anybody thinks that they can help the "Parker's" entry in any way or form, please let me know.
The route selected will be announced by the end of this month.

Posted - 21 January 2009 : 21:17:34 Well they made it as I recall but suffered a leaking n/s drive shaft boot. Nothing else at all failed though the sump and tank guards were both battered!
Do I want to do this again? No thank you, not in the Credit Crunch a I can tell you Miss D was not cheap !
I'm prepared to advise however . |

I believe advance parties have are close to arrival although Ms Daisy herself is delayed. We are waiting for further information on the arrival on the main party.
Thinking to scramble the Mongolian Air force.. but on second thoughts…

Delay on the moon landing vehicle. Solar Daisy has been delay. According to the Mongolia police you got a clearance to land at the Mongolian space centre, at any time. Yak's clear the runway.. she's coming in to land.

So at least it is honest stealing in Serbia.
Well they are probably in Turkey by now. That road I think is a motorway all the way to Istanbul.

"if they steal 50 Euros off you don't say I did not warn you."
I filled the car with Optimax today, bought some Muscadet and some Superking Menthol at Tesco...Big Gordon Brown mugged me for a bit more than 50 Euros for that..by stealth.

Posted - 18 July 2007 : 18:54:46 Almost There!
Well give or take a 1,000 miles either side of 10,500 !
The saga of the broken seats resulted in my making a comfort choice rather than going for the competition buckets. We reinforced the floor and squeezed in a couple of Primera SRi seats rather than GT ones. This meant that they would be cloth rather than half leather. The driver's one has lumbar support as well as the usual stuff.
The Primera SRi seats were kindly provided by Nissan First in Welshpool, a really first class Nissan Breakers. They have already promised to help with the three car Micra team I have been asked to put together for next year!
More photos will follow tomorrow evening. We were at a loss as to where to put the spare battery until I noticed that we could squeeze it in behind the existing battery tray. Mods were made to the leads so that either battery can now be used !
We removed the bonnet cable - the bonnet pins can be seen in one of the photos. You might also notice the special wheel nuts on the wheels. These are a nice match for the paintwork and have been machined to be an exact length fit for the telescopic wheel brace.
I shan't go on any more but you might enjoy the shots of Miss Daisy's rear - one with her skirts down and the other raised. This option is a fuel saving measure as big rally mud flaps increase drag.
Well that's it for now folks, my job is nearly done. BTW the guy in the driver's seat is Vince Mosley (rallyiste, garagiste, whizz tuner and ace preparer of endurance rally cars) a great guy I vaguely knew from the late '70s who donated a hell of a lot of workshop time for this project. Like all good rallymen he is a great bloke. I owe him and Mrs Mosley a very expensive dinner. I couldn't have done it all without his and his brother's help.
It is now in the lap of the Gods (and the girls!!!)!

Posted - 15 July 2007 : 20:42:09 Miss D had a good seeing too yesterday - so good that I broke the driver's seat. Just as well I did as there's nothing worse than having the damn thing break away from its mounting when you've got a few thousand miles to travel. I went up and down a hill farm track a couple of times. Conditions were very grim following yet another day's heavy rain but come test time the sun shone !
Traction with the Kumho rally tyres was superb and I think that the brakes will cope on the mountain section provided the girls are sensible and use plenty of engine braking. Left foot braking was a doddle and the rear end could be moved at will!
So it was back to the drawing board. We'll put in my old fixed rally seat and a co-driver's recliner on the passenger side. I'm not worried about size because if I could shoe horn myself into it, I'm sure Sophie and Helen will be able to do so with ease !
And that is hopefully my very last donation. £400 worth when new but that was quite a few years ago. Fortunately I don't think I ever scared myself or anybody else sitting in them sh*tl*ss - well not completely ! |

Posted - 12 July 2007 : 20:19:14 Sophie obviously forgot so here is:
We've now clocked up 60 hours of workshop time. I suspect that is not within the spirit of the event !
Major job fitting Pulsar bucket seats in Miss D. Two whole new reinforced subframes had to be made.
The Jamex springs can be seen. Miss D should settle after a good workout up a Welsh hill farm mountain track. And down again!!!
We are revising the brakes following the comments about the 3,300 metre mountain pass. Going up might be OK but brake fade will need watching on the descent.
The yellow wheels are the ones shod with the Kumho rally forest tyres. It's debatable whether to use those up and down the mountain or the M & S tyres. The chrome wheels bolts won't be on for long. There are some special alloy competition type ones to be fitted once they have been shortened. The wheels incidentally are from a Mk V Polo!
The front number plate has been moved and the old plate area has been drilled out with 5cm holes to improve cooling. This entire area is covered with a wire mesh grille to improve radiator protection. The crystral lense headlamps can be seen with Xenon bulbs and polycarbonate guards over.
More photos tomorrow when I go out for the shakedown!

Posted - 09 July 2007 : 22:09:46 Ok ok !!! Gosh I'm getting it in the neck - i have been planning on doing an update in a while!!
Firstly, Helen does seem to be clawing her way back to health but is still trying to take it easy and she is still signed off work. We are going to try and keep her on the boring english food as long possible.
Ant now has the car and will no doubt we working miracle on it. Its now less than 2 weeks to go and we have already bought our food (this last week), minus a few bits. I've been put in contact with a expedition doctor who I'm meeting up with on Sat and getting some prescriptions for antibotics or various 'important' bits and bobs - I'll just take his advice on it.
We have got so much packed - well i have that i have no idea if it will all fit in the car and we have about 6 bags/boxes for sworde-teppa that will get distributed amoungst the other cars.
The ice cream van people might have something going on which could result us on being on tv - we will see, its all at the beginning stages of things. Jack osbourne is doing the rally if i didn't mention it before, so sooner or later it will be on tv!!
Hmm..other news...there has been lots going on, we have even being having issues/debates over our Turkmen visas today and plans are still changing, but I think we've made all the important decisions now. We are still only just starting to buy maps! At the mo I've got Team SkipLizard staying with me in Soton - just to be a bit random, they have been dealing with their car over here so came over early.
Anyway, I reckon thats just about it for now. Oh, and also i realise out website is pretty awful - i think its just the provider is overloaded. As people are finding it difficult to sponsor us its making us think we could try and get it changed before the launch but its so last minute it could be tricky. We will however set up a simple photo site to download them when in internet cafes - like flikr or something - it will be sorted!!
Sorry i've been so quite. I'll try to get another update before the launch, after all updating our website at the mo is a bit of a nightmare.
Hope all is well with everyone, and thanks for all the support and good wishes!
