sophieamelia is definitely going on the '07 Mongol Rally. A number of our esteemed members have already offered help (and money!) and I know that TP and VFC are advising her on the on road driving aspect.
We are going to be preparing the car down here (definitely a LHD) but choice not yet finally made. It will have to survive about 15,000 kms of pretty rough roads.
If anybody thinks that they can help the "Parker's" entry in any way or form, please let me know.
The route selected will be announced by the end of this month.

Hello guys :)
Only spoke to Ant today and realised that this new thread was here! I had a look a Twingo which is in contention on ebay and think its great :) but beyond the budget (If it doesn't shoot up in price in the last day) perhaps someone on Parkers might have / know of someone who could lend a trailer? (don't know if you don't ask - even though its a long shot) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300048793226&fromMakeTrack=true and do you think they absolutely mean a trailer not towing? In anycase...just thought I'd say that I approve - it looks dinky and its a LGD, oh and bigger engine means more money to charity - thats the rules.

Is that not the beastie that you need for such a treck, lots of ground clearance, field stripable, room for 2 plus a few sheep and only 650cc.
I would write something witty here if I could be bothered. |

I think the electronics are going to be the Achilles heel on this project car, not to mention the reliability issues when out on the rally.
I think you best option is to return to a basic car with basic mechanics that are easily repairable at the roadside/service area like a 1.0L nova also isn’t the Twingo over the 1000cc limit or is a 1.2 acceptable?
If so
Nova
EDIT: I might be able to obtain an ‘A’ frame and a van with a tow ball but will need warning to see if it is available.

Twingo is a non-runner as the car is a semi-auto and the 'box ECU is doubtful - even when running properly!
If any one has any ideas or knows of a 1.0 litre LHD let us know! All help gratefully received.
I think that justg is correct about a Nova - bits are cheap and uprated suspension parts not hard to come by. Even an early Renault 5 (with carb) is on the cards. If a Micra should happen along, all the better.
If the car is going to be of any use in Mongolia (when left behind) the fewer electonics it has the better!

I just negotiated a deal on a Nova for £150 only to find out that it is a 1196 cc
Which Micra are you after the square one or the bubble?
It could also be worth a scout phoning some of the main dealers to see what part exchanges they have as it is sometime more beneficial for them to give it away for very little than to dispose in a more environmentally friendly way.

Any of you near a Nissan dealer needing publicity? Or Nissan UK?
Prepared to have some publicity if they donate a used Micra to Sophie - Rally Prepared, with Antmats help - Left hand drive if needed.?
If Factory support is prohibited ( I would expect) is dealer support?
Thoughts/Comments???

So do you reckon that if a trailer or a form or transport did become available for the semi-automatic Twingo (with the fully reclining seats) it would be a good idea? I thought the semi automatic wasn't going to be such a problem? I'm not too clear on what impact the ECU is going to have on things. But is it really a definite non runner? (it hasn't gone up in price from £150...)

Also I'll clear up the issue of the engine size. It is SUPPOSED to be 1,000cc or less and when entering the rally there is a £1000 charity donation. However quite a few people enter the rally with slightly bigger engines and a larger charity contribution matches the engine size - so it would be £1,200 for a 1.2. So there is some flexibility. If a vehicle is really novel they can have any engine size they want without paying extra. This last year there was apparently a he**** that took part in the rally! :)

Even if the Twingo 'box were OK I think it would be too risky. Renault auto and semi-auto boxes can be pigs when it comes to the electronics.
Something will crop up - I am inclined towards an early 5 as well as a small Far Eastern jobbie. 5 parts are very plentiful and cheap, and 5s will go on until the body falls off! You'll get damp in the process too !

About the same protection as we get here from Uncle Tony and all the other *****s in Westminster - probably more, from poor people who know how it feels to be hungry and to offer hospitality and share the little they have with strangers

"Our back up team isn't just small, it doesn't exist. If you come on the Mongol Rally, you're relying on yourself. It's an adventure not a petting zoo so we can in no way guarantee your arrival at the destination, or your safety."

That's I would like to do. You'll have to mail me the details, to get the time off work and stuff. I might go a week or so with you then a week or so back again. Don't have to reach Mongolia, me.
Kazakhstan and Borat's sister would probably be enough for me.

Well both sounds good to me....I think Ant will be back on the forum in a few days again and decision making for me on the car front. I had a suggestion this wknd to approach Nissan UK and see if they wouldn't just sponser me but give me some free parts for converting a right to left (if i could find someone to do it). That gives me more of a chance of getting my hands on the micra but I guess time might be getting a bit short for that now..

What sort of help is needed?
Maybe Sophie or Ant when hes back could list a few items or services (oo-err) that are needed?
For instance im sure i could lay my hands on a laptop to loan for the duration of the trip if one was needed
Cheers

Paul,
I suggested to Antmat, weeks ago, that we could have some kind of 'trace' on Sophies' progress that could be followed on Parkers - I think he or she told me that laptops were not permitted on the drive? ...she is going through some 'sensitive' areas.
Nice thought though...do you have any contact with a marketing brain in Emap who could make some capital from this?
VFC.

Unfortunately no contacts within Emap VFC (Emap have a marketing brain )
Was just a thought about the laptop or possibly an Ipaq coupled with Sat Nav which i have sat on my desk at the moment?
Not sure what the policies are on taking any electronic gear through borders, my boss had a problem going through Croatia / Bosnia etc with his laptop in the boot - eventually i think he "bought insurance"

Hello! I'm back from a few days off work - bliss! I've finally just about summarised all the most important info from the FO from all countries along all the possible routes. Its taken a while. Turns out that every route has at least one country where 'car crime is rife' and that everything should be hidden or removed - the main problem countries being Bulgaria (where the whole car will probably disappear unless we are in it and even then theres the car jackings), Lithuania and Ukraine. So as we can't avoid all of them and there are obviously other problem countries I wouldn't feel comfortable being 'lent' anything valuable! What would probably be a good idea is trying to fix up one of those sheets that can be drawn across the inside of the car so people can't see whats underneath it in the car (I have no idea what its called and you probably won't guess what I'm jabbering about), but also maybe some window blinds and a decent car lock.

'Problem countries'
Lithuania: Really pulled itself up lately, modernising and lower crime rates than a decade ago.
Bulgaria: As Lithuania, not as bad as you might think.
Ukraine: Yep, keep your doors locked.

....no problem! My contact at Nissan UK has said that suitable parts will be supp**** for a K ll l litre engine as soon as the route has been selected - Nissan has all the info re. octane ratings so at least a suitable low compression head gasket will be supp****.
We still need help so if any one can act as:
