What is miles per pound?

Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 43 - 83 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Even the least-economical Mito – the 78hp 1.4 – claims more than 50mpg (just), so running the smallest Alfa Romeo shouldn’t be too hard on your wallet.

The most economical petrol is the TwinAir engine, returning a claimed 67.3mpg, while both versions of the 1.4-litre MultiAir engine are capable of returning up to 52.3mpg.

Go for the diesel, however, and you could see fuel returns of up to 83.1mpg, at least according to Alfa.

We’d advise taking all of these figures with a pinch of salt, though, as these are in lab conditions that you’ll struggle to replicate in the real world.

It’s especially true of the TwinAir engine, which you really have to rev hard to make swift progress, which sees economy take a dramatic dive. It doesn’t take much to see the figure dip below 40mpg on the trip computer.

Insurance groups are also usefully low across the range, while CO2 emissions are fairly reasonable, which you can read more about below.

When it comes to CO2 emissions, it’s no surprise to learn that it’s the 1.3-litre JTDm-2 diesel that emits the least amount from the whole Mito range, at just 89g/km.

The dinky TwinAir engine isn’t far behind, though, with emissions of 99g/km, while both versions of the 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol produce 124g/km.

Ironically, it’s the least powerful, slowest petrol that produces the most amount of CO2 – 130g/km of the stuff – making it only slightly cleaner (by 3g/km) than a MINI Cooper S Hatch.

The Mito is based on the ageing Fiat Punto platform, but that does mean it’s one that uses tried-and-tested parts, which may go some way to reassuring owners scared off by Alfa Romeo’s patchy history for reliability.

However, there’s been one recall to speak of – relating to a brake servo issue on some cars produced between June and September 2012.

Any car you may be interested in should have had any remedial work taken out on it, though.
