How much space is there?

Sharing its underpinnings with the practical A4 saloon means the A5 is a very easy coupe to live with. Of course, it’s not as practical as the Audi A4, which should be a given considering that it only has two side doors and a more aggressively sloping roofline. The two back seats are best described as occasional for anyone over six feet tall, although smaller passengers will find the head and legroom acceptable.

Boot space and storage

The boot is smaller than the A4’s, but ten litres up on the first-generation A5, offering a total of 465 litres and 40/20/40 split rear seats for longer items. Obviously, with a conventional bootlid, accessing the boot space isn’t as easy as it is in the A5 Sportback with its electrically operated tailgate.

However, you can specify a gesture-controlled electric bootlid and an automatic pop-out towbar as options boosting the practicality of this two-door coupe. There’s space for a full size spare and a couple of oddments areas. An optional load net is very useful on high-performance models or rush-hour roundabouts. Quattro models have the same bootspace as front-wheel drive variants.

Is it easy to park?

Large for a two-door car, the Audi A5 proves remarkably easy to place on the road. Good forward visibility and reasonably sized mirrors are assisted by driver aids and a 360-degree camera pack available in some option bundles. The low level of the dashboard also increases visibility.

The only time you’ll find the A5’s body design harder to live with than the A4 is when opening the doors, when the extra length requires a reasonable amount of clearance, particularly if using the rear seats. This can make tightly spaced parking bays a bit of a chore.

The A4 it’s based on gained the full five stars from Euro NCAP back in 2015, and you can be assured that it’s a safe car, even if it’s not been tested to the latest standards. There’s plenty of safety equipment on offer including active lane assist, adaptive cruise control, Pre Sense City emergency stop and multi-collision brake assist filling the roster.

Given that the two-door A5s are strict four-seaters, it’s no surprise that both of the rear seats offer generous amounts of space for an Isofix car seat – providing you don’t mind accessing them by tipping the front seats forward. The front passenger seat also has Isofix mounting points for a rear-facing seat, but installing one makes access to the back seats from the kerbside impossible.
