Equipment

3.8 out of 5 3.8
  • Four models available
  • All feel luxurious
  • Wide range of options

Comprising of four models with a choice of 4.0- and 6.0-litre twin-turbo engines, the Continental GT range is refreshingly straightforward to understand.

Standard Bentley Continental GT coupe equipment

Describing a Bentley as standard doesn’t remotely do the car justice – here you’re not just buying off-the-shelf equipment elements but the time, dedication and craftsmanship associated with the Crewe-based marque and its team of experienced staff.

Starting point for the range is the GT V8 – take essentials such as electrically operated windows, door mirrors and seats, as well as dual-zone climate control as read. Distinguishing the V8 are a choice of dark fiddleback eucalyptus or dark-stained madrone veneers for the dashboard, centre console and doors, a leather and chrome-trimmed gearlever and four different colours of leather upholstery.

Outside there’s air suspension with continuous damping control, 20-inch “six tri-spoke” alloy wheels, black brake calipers, twin figure-of-eight exhausts, a chrome-look grille, bi-xenon headlamps with LED main beam and red badging.

Building upon that is the sportier GT V8 S, subtly differentiated inside by piano black veneers and a knurled gearknob.

The exterior changes are slightly more obvious with a black mesh grille and similarly-hued body kit on the Bentley’s lower extremes, while behind the 20-inch “open spoke” alloys are red brake calipers.

There’s no W12 reference for the next model up – it’s simply known as the GT – which doesn’t look dissimilar from the V8 model. Inside there’s a more luxurious feel with burr walnut trim replacing the eucalyptus option, with a choice of 17 leather colours, including two-tone options.

Save for a set of W12 badges for the wings and oval tailpipes, the exterior’s the same too.

Changes for the GT Speed are unsurprisingly a hybrid of both the W12-engined GT and the V8 S, so inside the black veneers sit alongside the broader spectrum of leather colours. As part of the Mulliner Driving Specification it also benefits from diamond-quilted leather, a hide headlining and alloy pedals.

Outside it’s a little more distinctive with “dark tint” (read grey) grilles, lights and 21-inch “Speed” alloy wheels, although the bodykit is the same colour as the rest of the car.

Optional Bentley Continental GT coupe accessories

Although the Continental GT is expensive to begin with, you can spend considerably more money on a raft of personalisation options. As ever we advise caution here – you might fancy a non-standard matt copper paint scheme with contrasting verdigris-hued quilted leather but chances are nobody else will when it comes to selling it on. A new Bentley specialist will be able to talk you through options that can help come resale time.

More sensible are the option bundles available, grouping together a number of more desirable specification elements into cohesive packages.

Choose the Mulliner Driving Specification for a choice of three designs of 21-inch alloy wheel, diamond-pattern quilted leather and drilled alloy sports pedals.

Pick Premier Specification for a reversing camera, ventilated and massaging front seats, adjustable front armrests and a high-end Naim audio system.

Further personalisation is available with the Interior Style Specification, featuring deep-pile mats, a special steering wheel and contrast-colour stitching to the leather surfaces.

Safety

4 out of 5 4.0
  • Not crash-tested by experts at Euro NCAP
  • Based on proven VW technology
  • All models feature all-wheel drive

You won’t find details of the Bentley Continental GT’s safety score on the Euro NCAP website as it’s not been tested by the crash analysis experts. However, don’t fear because parent company Volkswagen has an excellent reputation at doing well on these tests and the Bentley is based on tried-and-tested VW hardware.

Naturally, you’ll find the cabin surrounded by airbags, while a suite of electronic stability systems and four-wheel drive help prevent the car becoming too lairy in tricky conditions.

LED lighting technology also ensures you’re easily seen by other road users.

Interior & boot space

3 out of 5 3.0
  • Useful 358-litre boot capacity
  • Seats four – just about
  • Luxury finishes don’t promote practicality

Chances are that if you’re considering a Bentley Continental GT you already have a car or two in your fleet that’s considerably more practical, not that the Crewe-built coupe disgraces itself compared with its key rivals.

You’re unlikely to sniff at 358 litres of boot space, which is more than ample for a couple of cases and other sundries for a spontaneous drive to the French Riviera, and there’s a decent amount of cabin space compared with other cars in this segment. Just keep expectations sensible – you’re unlikely to have palatial amounts of rear room in any two-door coupe.

Living with a Continental GT on a daily basis wouldn’t prove a chore either – there’s a good amount of storage space, with sensible cubbies dotted about the cabin. Your main issue will be not wanting to damage the high-quality wood and leather finishes that envelope the interior.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Bentley Continental GT Coupe compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Bentley Continental GT Coupe 358 litres
Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe 350 litres
Porsche 911 Coupé 125 litres
