Most Z3s are competent cruisers rather than track-day specials and will behave more like a family saloon. 1.8 and 1.9 engines are tame and compare with cheaper MX-5 and MGF. They handle safely and give good roadholding, but lack punch; the later 2.0 is an improvement. The 2.2, 2.8 and 3.0 are all exciting, but only the M 3.2 engine gives the outrageous performance that Z3 deserves.

The rear suspension was borrowed from the old E30 3-Series and is pretty unsophisticated. As such, the ride is fairly unrefined on anything less than smooth tarmac. Handling is generally safe with plenty of grip.
