The Safe Vans Guide has been launched to help van drivers get better behind the wheel.

This 64-page guide is part of the Driving for Better Business Campaign, which is being run by Roadsafe and is part of the Driving for Work Road Safety strategy funded by the Department for Transport.

The main aim of this new guide is to raise awareness of the importance of work-related road safety, in the business community and public sector.

The guide says companies that adopt ideas and solutions detailed in it should help to reduce the amount of driving-at-work accidents and help companies make cost savings.

This could include improvements in the safety culture of the entire workforce. A reduction in the number of driving-at-work incidents will also reduce associated wear and tear, repair and replacement costs.

Insurance costs will also tumble if the incident rates at businesses are reduced.

At present  50 public and private sector fleets, including Arval UK, Balfour Beatty Plant and Fleet Services, BT, Cambridgeshire County Council, Centrica, LeasePlan and Tesco have signed up to the government-backed scheme to reduce the number of road crashes involving at-work drivers.
