If you're thinking about starting the chore of trawling the used cars for sale section of the classifieds section in your local paper, why not have a look at this selection of fantastic second-hand deals?

We've picked out the four cars for sale today that boast more than 60mpg, cost £20 a year in road tax and can be bought second-hand for less than £5,000.

Citroen C1 1.0i Vibe 3dr

Why buy?
The C1 is a great drive, is cheap to run and fits into the smallest of spaces. The petrol engine in the Vibe is a lively little unit, although things can get a little noisy on the motorway. The low insurance costs also means it's the perfect first car or great for anyone looking to downsize.

One we found: Grey, 06 reg, £3,485

Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVTi

Why buy?
The Aygo has cheeky styling aimed at twenty-somethings, and has enough space to transport four fully grown adults in relative comfort. It boasts ultra-low running costs and superior build quality to most cars of this size. The little three cylinder engine is a feisty little unit, but incredibly frugal at the same time. Nimble handling and a smooth ride adds to this being one of the best city cars you can buy.
