It was inevitable. Ford has the Focus ST, Vauxhall the Astra VXR, Renault the Megane Renaultsport so Kia thought: ‘we need some of this.”

So here you are: the Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT – the brand’s most performance-focused production cars ever, but still with those ruddy apostrophes.

President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, oversaw the aesthetics for both and if you want the PR bilge then you’ll appreciate the ‘bold athletic styling’, however if you want the facts then here they are: both models get LED daytime running lights, dual-exhaust pipes, Recaro sports seats, 18-inch alloy wheels and red brake calipers.

Under the bonnets of both cars lies a turbocharged 1.6-litre 201bhp petrol engine that’ll get the Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT from 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds. Yep, it’s not as fast as the Focus ST, Astra VXR or the Renault Megane but y’know, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The pro_cee’d GT is expected to go on sale from the middle of the year and be joined by the cee’d GT towards the end of 2013. Prices and specifications will be confirmed closer to the on-sale dates.
