Fiat Tipo hatchback (16-) preview

  • Spacious cabin, huge boot
  • Efficient diesel engine
  • Will be cheap

The 2016 Fiat Tipo hatchback represents the revival of a name first seen on UK roads back in the ‘80s, but now it’s back and taking aim at the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Kia Ceed.

Spacious interior

We don’t know very much at all about this new model, but it’s clear the cabin has a lot of room in it. Fiat claims it’ll accommodate three six-foot-three passengers in the rear, which is quite a claim for a medium hatchback.

Its boot is huge too, with 440 litres on offer. That bests most cars in the sector, with only the Peugeot 308, Skoda Octavia and lesser-spotted MG6 boasting more room behind the rear seats.

The interior features another 12 litres of storage room in compartments dotted around the cabin to store personal items out of the view of prying eyes.

Basic specification details

Specifications haven’t been released yet, but we’re expecting three trim levels in the UK. Don’t forget this is a value proposition, so it’s not going to feature the plushness you’d expect from an Audi, for example.

Regardless, you’ll get a USB port to charge your devices on the move, while other notable equipment on entry-level cars will include:

  • Air-con
  • Electric mirrors
  • Six airbags
  • DAB radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Stereo controls on the steering wheel

Engine line-up

We’re expecting a range of five engines, though it’s not clear whether all will be available here. By far the most popular will be a 1.6-litre diesel that returns a claimed 76mpg and emits 98g/km of CO2, making it at least competitive in the sector, if not the most efficient. There will also be the option of a six-speed twin-clutch gearbox called TCT, as seen in the Alfa Romeo Giulietta range.

Other engines in the line-up include a 1.3 diesel and two 1.4 petrols (one with a turbocharger, one without) and a 1.6 petrol exclusively with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Set to go on sale in September, prices, a full engine line-up with performance figures and a grade structure will be released closer to the time.

Keep an eye out for the full Fiat Tipo Hatchback review coming soon.
