Less than £18,000: Renault Grand Modus 1.5dCi Expression

WHAT IS IT?

The Grand Modus is a sensible buy for small families. With clever storage solutions and child-friendly features, it's also very safe with six airbags, cornering lights, ABS, stability control and a good Euro NCAP crash test rating. The 1.5-litre diesel is also frugal, with a wallet-friendly average economy of 68mpg. The Renault isn't as good to drive as some of the competition but the ride quality is acceptable and the light power steering makes parking a doddle. Besides being cheap to buy, the Grand Modus is also cheap to run, making it ideal for those on a budget.
