Less than £9,000: Renault Twingo 1.2 16v Bizu 3dr

WHAT IS IT?

Since 2007 Renault's Twingo has been a strong competitor in the cheap city car market. The special edition Bizu model has emissions of 119g/km, which drives tax costs down, while the frugal 1.2-litre engine returns 55mpg. It also gets the same amount of equipment as the Expression but it's £272 cheaper to buy. As a city car the tiny Renault is easy to drive and the engine has the power to whiz around town at decent speeds. The Twingo also has a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
