Cars on show: C-X17 crossover concept
C-X17 Concept
This is the big unveil for Jaguar at Frankfurt this year because it heralds not only a possible new model rumoured to be a crossover, but provides a basis for other bodystyles including a compact executive car to rival the BMW 3 Series. The concept is made from aluminium which helps reduce weight, improve fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.
Jaguar has a history of manufacturing aluminium cars, which started with the launch of the 2003 XJ saloon, and could ensure any new Jaguar provides class-leading emissions, fuel consumption and performance.
The 23-inch alloy wheels and striking bodywork really make this concept car stand out. Under the skin there’s a number of features borrowed from the wider Jaguar-Land Rover group including sophisticated off-road tech and of course the firm’s excellent range of versatile engines and gearboxes. According to Jaguar this could mean speeds of 186mph will be possible along with CO2 emissions below 100g/km.
In the pictures you can see a beautifully sculpted panoramic sunroof and an extremely interior with modern-looking materials. Don’t expect everything you see to make it onto the production car, but there’s a definite theme to extract for the C-X17.
As you can imagine, this is extremely big news for Jaguar. The concept showcases the direction the firm is going to move towards in the coming years, so it’s definitely worth sitting up and taking note.
The first car to use this architecture will be a BMW 3 Series rival due in 2015. It’s going to have to be something pretty impressive to compete in that market, but judging by the firm’s current successes that’s not too difficult to imagine.
