Toyota to issue further recalls

29 July 2010
  • Manufacturer to recall 348 Land Cruiser models in the UK
  • Amazon models affected by steering related problem
  • Latest issue follows major recalls earlier in the year

Toyota has been hit by further mechanical problems resulting in the firm having to recall more cars.

A total of 348 Land Cruiser Amazon models built between July 2002 and September 2006 will be recalled because of a steering related issue.

The issue concerns a part within the steering mechanism. Toyota says it can become detached by an impact such as driving over a large pothole or obstacle. If this happens and the driver uses full, opposite lock the steering could stop working.

While the Land Cruiser is being recalled there have been just two reported problems in Europe and no accidents reported because of the issue.

This is the latest problem in an incident-packed year for the manufacturer. Earlier in 2010 Toyota was forced to recall seven different models due to potential faulty accelerator pedals and then call in 8,500 Prius models after issues with the brakes.

As a precaution to any further problems Toyota announced that it would fit all future models with a new safety system while the car maker is also looking in to using aircraft-style black boxes to record events leading up to accidents.

All owners of the car affected will be contacted by Toyota to take their car to a service centre to have the parts replace. This will be done at no cost and Toyota claims the repair will take around two hours and customers will be offered a replacement car if they need one

Owners can find out if their car is affected by going to the Toyota website and entering the VIN - Vehicle Identification Number. A recall information page is also available on the website while customers can also call 01737 367600.
