VW introduces more frugal models

23 November 2010
  • Greener Scirocco and Passat CC available now
  • Stop/start and regeneration systems fitted
  • Improved economy and cheaper road tax

Volkswagen has unveiled the cleanest and most efficient versions of the Scirocco and Passat CC yet, in the form of new BlueMotion Technology models.

All entry-level Scirocco and GT trim models with the 2.0-litre 138bhp diesel engine now feature BlueMotion Technology with stop/start and battery regeneration systems.

The models, available with a six-speed manual, or optional rapid-shifting DSG gearbox, offer improved economy of 62.8mpg, up from 55.4mpg (57.6mpg up from 51.4mpg for the DSG).

Emissions have dropped from 134g/km to 118g/km of CO2 (145g/km to 129g/km for the DSG) meaning that tax is now £30 (previously £110) for the manual or £90 a year for the DSG (previously £125). The lowered emissions mean showroom tax is now free for both models, as opposed to £110-£125.

Also revised is the 2.0-litre diesel 168bhp engine fitted to the Scirocco GT, which results in fuel economy improving from 53.3mpg to 55.4mpg (50.4mpg to 51.4mpg for the DSG) and CO2 emissions falling from 139g/km to 134 g/km (147g/km to 144g/km for the DSG). Road tax costs remain unchanged.

The Passat CC has also been updated and sees BlueMotion Technology models replacing existing diesel versions. As with the Scirocco, the new additions to the Passat CC range include regenerative braking and start/stop systems for the first time.

These revisions help the 2.0-litre diesel 138bhp models achieve a combined 60.1mpg, up from 50.4mpg, while CO2 emissions drop to 125g/km (previously 146 g/km) - meaning road tax falls from £125 to £90 and that the car now qualifies for free showroom tax.

The more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine in the CC range, producing 168bhp, also benefits from improved figures with economy up to 57.6mpg (51.4mpg for the DSG) and emissions down to 129g/km, from 146g/km (144g/km from 158g/km for the DSG). This results in a similar drop in road tax from £125 to £90 for the manual, and £155 to £125 for the DSG, with the manual now getting free showroom tax while the DSG costs £125.

The Scirocco (starting from £21,500) and Passat CC (costing upwards of £23,555) with BlueMotion Technology are available to order at Volkswagen dealers now.
