How car tax rates are calculated

For cars registered after March 1st, 2001, the DVLA car tax rate (Vehicle Excise Duty) is based on the car's CO2 emissions and the type of fuel it uses.

For cars registered before March 1st, 2001, car tax is based on engine size only. There is one rate for engines up to 1549cc and one for 1550cc and over.

Brand new cars registered after April 1, 2010 are subject to a different rate of road tax during their first year from new. The annual road tax rate for all subsequent years is the standard rate - e.g. the 12 month figure shown.

VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) is a tax payable on all road cars. The price you pay is either worked out using the CO2 emissions of your car or the size of the engine (depending on how old it is), and can be paid in either six month or one year instalments.
