What's a franchised dealer?

These are car manufacturers' official retailers. A franchised dealer will sell cars that the car manufacturer supplies directly and, in most instances, will be able to sell you a car that's built-to-order. The used cars that you'll find for sale here are usually sold under an 'used approved' scheme. That means there’ll be at least a year's warranty, a full history check and a multi-point inspection.

What's a car supermarket?

Car supermarkets tend to be large sites, stocking hundreds of cars and a mixture of makes. As well as selling used cars, many sell new cars. Although they're cheap, choice is more limited and there's no scope to specify a car to your taste. Don't expect much room to haggle either - the price you see is generally the price you pay. Some car supermarkets have outlets in a number of cities.

What is an independent dealer?

These dealers are independent of the manufacturers and sell a variety of makes and models, most of which will be three years and older. The dealers can vary in size from big retail operations to small one-person set-ups. They don't tend to sell new cars and can offer varying pre-sales checks and post-sale warranties.
