Alfa Romeo 159 Saloon (06-11) - Review Review by Ben Wall on 13 March 2006 Last Updated: 14 June 2011 The replacement for the 156 follows a familiar recipe for Alfa Romeo. Its stunning four-door body is awash with delightful details, from the triple lens headlights to the sculpted door handles. The interior is similarly evocative with an emphasis on Italian style setting it apart from alternatives while it drives in a sporty manner with a range of powerful petrol and diesel engines. All this will sound familiar to anyone who has owned an Alfa before but the 159 has to shake off the reputation for shoddy build quality and apathetic dealers. Alfa Romeo claims to have addressed these issues, which if true means owners won't have to suffer for their passion 4 out of 5 Other Alfa Romeo reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 3.5 out of 5 Comfort The 159 is longer than the 156 it replaced, but rear passengers would be hard pushed to notice, as legroom in the back is limited. Otherwise it seems quite generous and there's no shortage of headroom. The slippery body shape and extra thick glass help to keep engine and wind noise down, but this only highlights the somewhat intrusive tyre noise, especially on cars with low profile tyres. But the seats offer good support, especially on the top models with sports seats, while they're comfortable on long journeys too. The boot is big, the rear seats fold down for carrying longer items and there's also a ski hatch. On the downside the seats don't split on all models and the distance between the boot and cabin with the seats folded is quiet constricted. Annoyingly - on early models - the boot could only be opened with the button on the key fob. Luckily this was changed later with a release built into the Alfa Romeo badge on the boot lid. Storage up front could be better though - the door pockets are narrow and shallow while the central cubby between the front seats isn't very useful. Three deeply recessed dials (complete with Italian labelling) are angled at the driver while the steering, gearchange, and pedals all feel nicely weighted and work smoothly and precisely. Basic Turismo models feature a velour type fabric that looks and feels much like suede. The console area is decorated with a grey plastic, but this is replaced by a much more upmarket metal finish on higher-spec models. The steering wheel and column stalks are laden with easy to use functions, but the factory fit sat nav system disappoints in terms of operation and the size and detail of its map.
