Alfa Romeo GTV (96-04) - Review

Coupés are all about style - something the GTV has in abundance. Despite being around since 1996 it still looks fantastic inside and out, helped by a mid-life facelift. You'll have to make sacrifices in the practicality department since the rear seats are only fit for luggage, and it's not cheap to run either with thirsty petrol engines. However it's enjoyable to drive and quick too - if you want a bit of Italian soul then the GTV could be the answer.

Comfort

Despite its small dimensions the GTV is a surprisingly comfortable car for long journeys thanks to the low slung seats, but they could do with more support. There isn't a huge amount of adjustment in the driving position either but this isn't generally a problem unless you're very tall. Despite the presence of a rear bench, it's strictly a two seater only and the ride is firm too so over bumpy or rough roads there's plenty of vibration through the cabin.

Practicality

It may be a four-seater, but in reality the rear seats are so small that you would only stick young children in the back. The tiny boot means you'll end up putting luggage in the back anyway while up front there's a severe lack of storage space.

Behind the wheel

Alfa has always had a flair for producing beautiful interiors and the GTV is no exception. It feels every inch the sporty Italian coupe with heavily cowled dials, supportive seats and a high mounted gear lever. Top of the range models get sumptuous leather seats.
