Audi A2 (00-05) - Review Review by David Ross on 16 July 2008 Last Updated: 17 July 2009 The A2 was a car ahead of its time. Launched in 2000, it was revolutionary in that it used a body made entirely of weight-saving aluminium, which - along with a range of small and efficient engines - made it extremely economical with low CO2 figures. As a result it can compete with the greenest new cars on sale today and is cheap to run too. The unconventional styling was a huge departure for Audi at the time but has aged very well, the A2 still looking distinctive. It's designed primarily for town or city driving and its short length (less than four metres) makes it easy to manoeuvre into small spaces. It's impressively roomy inside too with plenty of rear passenger room and a decent boot, making it an ideal car for small families. 4 out of 5 Other Audi reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 4 out of 5 Comfort Despite its compact dimensions, the A2's clever design means there is plenty of passenger space and you'll easily carry four adults without any problems. The high roof and long-travel seats mean tall drivers can get comfortable - rear space is a little tight (with two six-footers in the front) but on the plus side the deep footwells improve both leg and headroom. Engine noise can be an issue, especially on the motorway, but the aerodynamic shape means wind noise is minimal. The A2 also rides well and is comfortable on long journeys. It's capable of the occasional DIY load or a moderate shopping spree, but don't expect cavernous load lugging abilities. The seats are very flexible though - the fold down either individually or together - or alternatively they can be removed entirely to accommodate bulky items. Rear visibility is good but it's not always helped by the absence of a rear wash wipe. Get a Audi A2 valuation View full gallery How does the boot space compare? The air conditioning controls are placed quite low down too, but the instrument dials are easy to read and the seats are comfortable. It's just a shame that the cabin doesn't reflect the adventurous and funky style of the exterior, it's a little drab. The high driving position gives good all round vision, but the windscreen pillars are quite thick which can make pulling out of junctions tricky.
