Audi A3 (96-03) - Review Review by David Ross on 16 July 2008 The A3 was Audi's take on the Volkswagen Golf Mk3 and became the first hatchback from a premium manufacturer. It actually borrows most of its underpinnings from the Golf, including some excellent engines, but adds more stylish looks and a higher quality finish. When it was launched in 1996, prices were steep for what was essentially a three-door family hatchback, but thanks to the prestige badge it proved popular. Used prices are now lower, making it a good alternative to a used Golf or BMW 3-Series Compact. Family buyers are better off finding a five-door model - these were introduced in 1999. The A3 was finally replaced in 2003. 3.5 out of 5 Other Audi reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 3 out of 5 Comfort The driver and front passenger will find few complaints with the A3. The driving position is spot on and the seats are supportive and comfortable. However, if you're planning on regularly carrying passengers then think again. There simply isn't enough rear head or legroom to carry adults for long - in any comfort at least. On the motorway the Audi is quiet and the cabin is well insulated against wind and road noise, the diesel engines can be a bit on the noisy side however, especially at high revs. View full gallery 3 out of 5 Practicality The A3 offers reasonable boot space, but if you want to carry luggage for four adults it probably won't all fit. There are plenty of cubby holes for bottles and drinks however and the split folding rear seats give a bit more practicality, but the boot opening is a little high and a can be awkward to access. Get a Audi A3 valuation 3.5 out of 5 Behind the wheel Despite the obvious Volkswagen switchgear, the A3 is an upmarket car and even the base models are superbly finished. The cabin design has aged well and although not particularly adventurous everything is well laid out and simple to use. Build quality is excellent too and the Audi cabin will last for years.
