Audi A4 Allroad (09 on) - Review

The A4 allroad is designed to give buyers off-road practicality without the bulk of a full-size 4x4. It's best suited to those who only need occasional off-road ability - it will struggle with traditional 4x4 terrain, but makes light work of otherwise inaccessible muddy tracks. It retains the strengths of the standard A4 Avant estate, so is good to drive, beautifully built and comfortable on the move. The range is much slimmed-down compared to the standard A4 and - as a new car at least - is much more expensive. Such is the premium, that it leaves the A4 allroad in a strange position. For a little bit more, buyers can have the full-size Q5 or they can make a significant saving by opting for a standard Avant with quattro four-wheel drive.

Comfort

Two adults can comfortably sit in the back, or alternatively, it can easily accommodate three children. There's good leg, head and shoulder room, while on the move, engine noise is only noticeable under heavy acceleration. The three-zone climate control does a good job of cooling the interior, while buyers who opt for heated seats will find that they are exceptionally effective.

Practicality

There’s full estate car practicality with 490 litres of luggage space (1,430 with the seats folded flat) – more than enough for the needs of most families. The seats split and fold flat, while there is also a reversible wipe-clean boot mat that's ideal for muddy boots or pets. And with all-wheel drive capability, it means that this A4 is as practical in summer as it is in winter.

Behind the wheel

The slightly raised ride height is unnoticeable from the driver’s seat. In fact, from behind the wheel, you may as well be in any Audi Avant. That’s good new, as it’s a great interior: comfortable, well designed and attractive. The driver’s seat is multi-adjustable, as is the steering wheel – that means most drivers should be able to find a driving position that suits them. A number of functions – such as the air conditioning, stereo and sat nav – are controlled by a single dial. First-time users will find that it takes some getting used to, but it soon becomes an easy way to access these features on the move. All-round visibility is good and there’s even the option of a ‘blind spot warning system’.
