Audi A4 Avant (08 on) - Review Review by David Ross on 30 May 2008 Last Updated: 05 Mar 2012 4.5 If you can afford the asking price then the A4 Avant is one of the best family estates you can buy. It's roomy, comfortable, good to drive, safe, practical and of course comes with the kudos associated with owning an Audi. It's roomy, comfortable, good to drive, safe, practical and of course comes with the kudos associated with owning an Audi.Extensive engine rangeThe A4 Avant is available with a wide choice of engines, including a range of refined and economical diesels. They come in 2.0-litre, 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre versions. The 2.0-litre engines strike an excellent balance between performance and economy. The bigger 3.0-litre versions are best suited to those who really need the additional power, or need to tow trailers or carry lots of equipment. Audi’s petrol engine options utilise technology like direct injection and turbocharging to help boost economy and improve emissions. This doesn’t mean the petrol options are sluggish performers, however. The 2.0-litre TFSI, for example, is claimed to average 40mpg yet it will accelerate the A4 Avant from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds. Variety of optionsSeveral trim levels are on offer, ranging from entry-level ‘Standard Trim’ models up to the range-topping ‘Black Edition’. All are well equipped, meaning that even the entry level model is a sensible proposition. It comes with features like climate control, electric windows and alloy wheels. As ever there's a long options list and you should choose carefully. They can quickly become a significant part of your final bill and some will not add any value to your car when you come to sell. Options that are worth looking out for are things like the Parking System Plus and DAB digital radio. These help make the car easier to live with. Buyers can also pick from advanced accessories like Audi Drive Select, which allows you to fine-tune the car’s driving characteristics, and Audi Lane Assist. That warns you if you deviate out of your lane while driving. A host of other modern features are available but do remember to keep an eye on the cost of all the options. Comprehensive model rangeThe Audi A4 is interesting in that it is available in a range of different body styles. Besides the Avant version, buyers can also pick from a saloon, convertible, an off-road capable ‘Allroad’ model and numerous high-performance versions.
