Audi A4 Avant (08 on) - Review

If you can afford the new asking price, then the A4 Avant is one of the best family estates you can buy. It's roomy, comfortable, good to drive, safe, practical, and of course comes with the kudos associated with owning an Audi. You also get a wide choice of engines, including a range of exceptional - and highly economical - diesels. As ever there's a long options list and you should choose carefully - they can become a significant part of your final bill and some will not add any value to your car when you come to sell.

Buying new

Steady demand means that getting a discount won't be easy - you may have better luck trying to get some options thrown in for free. It's also a rare sight at the car supermarkets, which means that an Audi dealership is your best bet for getting one new. LED running lights have become Audi's front-end signature and are instantly recognisable - you'll need to specify S line to get them as standard.

Buying used

The A4 Avant estate was launched around six months later than the saloon. That means the earliest registration plate buyers will be able to find will be a 08/08, whereas saloon buyers have the option of an earlier 08/57. More than two thirds of all A4 Avants on the used market are the 2.0-litre TDI, so diesel buyers should have no problem finding one. But they should also be careful, a 2.0-litre TDI could have one of three power outputs - 120bhp, 143bhp or 170bhp.

Selling

Expect the A4 Avant to hold onto a great chunk of its value - especially if it's one of the diesel models. The 2.0-litre diesel will be the easiest to sell, but there's also plenty of competition. Useful options - such as heated leather seats and the load space divider - will help raise the value making your car more attractive.
