Audi A4 Saloon (08 on) - Review

Audi has tried long and hard to make its A4 as desirable as the BMW 3-Series but hasn't quite succeeded. At least until now. While the BMW may still have the edge on ultimate driver appeal, the 2008 A4 is a better all rounder. As beautifully finished as ever, Audi has ensured the A4 saloon is priced a little lower than premium alternatives and is more generous with equipment. Build quality was never in question, but now the A4 offers unrivalled interior space, superb comfort, improved driving dynamics and excellent refinement - making it our class favourite. There's also a great choice of engines offering everything from economy and low emissions to high performance.

Comfort

Interior space is improved vastly over the previous A4, so the saloon can now accommodate five adults with plenty of knee room and shoulder room in the back - a result of the long wheelbase. The seats are incredibly comfortable and supportive, especially the leather versions on top models. Electronic climate control is fitted as standard, with a three-zone system (this has individual front temperature adjustment plus separate adjustment for the rear compartment) available on SE models and above.

Practicality

The minimum boot volume in the A4 is 480 litres - ahead of key rivals from BMW and Mercedes. The boot is user-friendly too with a flat and wide floor plus an optional luggage pack can be chosen, including a net, retaining hooks and a 12-volt power socket. Luggage capacity is increased to 962 litres with the rear seats folded plus there's the option of a 'ski hatch' from the boot to the passenger compartment through the rear armrest. The glove compartment is a decent size as are the door bins.

Behind the wheel

Recent Audis have had a more driver-focused feel than in the past, with the central console now angled towards the driver. Fit and finish is still impeccable - probably the best anywhere - and the longer cabin with relatively narrow rear window pillars offers good visibility. The driver's seat adjusts for height and the steering adjusts for height and reach so it's easy to get a perfect driving position. Overall the A4 interior feels more special than other premium saloons.
