Back in 1984 Audi launched the Audi Sport Quattro – a car that would shape the very essence of the company and the cars it’s produced ever since. The intervening years have seen the hot RS brand grow to become an entity in its own right, and it’s the Audi RS5 that is the quattro’s spiritual successor.

Strangely the Audi A5 hasn’t been tested by EuroNCAP in any way shape or form – coupe, cabriolet, Sportback. However it’s safe to assume that Audi has done some extensive testing, and the RS5 is just as safe as any other car in its range, even if you are likely to be travelling faster than much of them for most of the time.

As mentioned Quattro four-wheel drive is standard on both the Coupe and Cabriolet RS5 as is stability control, hill-start assist and a torque-vectoring system. Opt for the open car and there’s an active roll-over protection system to protect rear passengers as well.

Otherwise the RS5 can be specified with active cruise control and it’s worth noting side airbags can’t be had with the optional bucket seats. There's also ISOFIX mounts for child seats in the rear.

Reliability

On the whole reliability is strong for the brand, so there’s no reason to expect Audi RS5 reliability to be anything different. Certainly there have been no major problems with the A5 in general, and the 4.2-litre V8 engine has been used in the R8 supercar without any issues.
