Audi A6 Avant (98-04) - Review

Like its saloon counterpart the A6 Avant offers superb build quality and refinement wrapped in a suitably understated body with a flawless finish. It may look a little plain compared to rival offerings but the Audi has a huge load carrying ability and makes a great family car.

Comfort

Thanks to comfortable but supportive seats the A6 makes long journeys a relaxing experience. Top spec models get sumptuous leather seats as standard while the performance S6 and RS6 variants have sports seats. On the move the smooth ride and lack of noise reflect the feeling of quality and refinement, although the 1.9 TDI engines can be a little noisy, especially at higher revs.

Practicality

With the exception of the Mercedes E-Class estate, A6 Avant is one of the biggest load carrier in its class with a wide boot that's easy to access. It's great for bulky and large items and can swallow enough kit for a few weeks holiday. There's plenty of room inside too - especially for rear passengers while up front there's good storage with clever hinged door pockets.

Behind the wheel

Audi's ergonomics are second to none. The cabin is airy and a perfect place to while away a long journey while the driving position offers enough adjustment to ensure that anyone can get comfortable. High quality materials, precision switches and clear instrument dials make it simple to get on with - although the stereo can be a little fiddly to use. All the controls like the gearchange and clutch work with real precision.
