Audi A6 Avant (98-04) - Review

Review by Parkers on

Like its saloon counterpart the A6 Avant offers superb build quality and refinement wrapped in a suitably understated body with a flawless finish. It may look a little plain compared to rival offerings but the Audi has a huge load carrying ability and makes a great family car.

The A6 scored reasonably well in the Euro NCAP crash tests - gaining three stars scored out of (at the time) a maximum of four. However, in today's context, that score looks average but clever features help protect occupants in crash situations, plus it comes with an alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks.

Reliability

Reliability in the A6 tends to be exemplary, with only occasional problems reported by owners since it was launched in 1997. Maintaining a full Audi service history will help this.

Body

Panelwork is expensive, so beware of blemishes or dents.

Engine/Gearbox

Above average reliability provided they have been looked after, so service history from an Audi dealer or specialist is vital.

Other

Check that the air conditioning and all gauges in the instrument cluster work properly. Check for buckled wheels and dog damage, too.
