Audi TT Coupé (06 on) - Review

Review by Simon Harris on
Last Updated: 27 October 2010
Audi's second generation TT is clearly related to its predecessor - but thanks to sleeker lines the coupe has a more aggressive and sporty appearance than before. If any criticism could have been levelled at the original TT, it would have been a lack of interior space and the fact that it was a less rewarding drive than some rivals. Audi has taken both of these factors on board to create a larger but lighter TT Coupe with improved handling and more space inside. The TT should, once again, be top of wish lists for people who want a stylish sports coupe and there's a good choice of engines available including an economical TDI which is capable of 53mpg.

Buying new

Demand will be high for the TT so don't expect a discount. The 2.0-litre version will offer the best prospect for an investment, losing less cash over its lifetime than the V6 but its the TDI that makes the most sense in terms of costs - thanks to low emissions and high fuel economy. The Magnetic Ride system is a good feature but it's a very expensive option at more than £1,000.

Buying used

The 2.0-litre is the preferred model on the used market, although the V6 will still retain a healthy premium over it. The TT has a decent options list and key features include the Magnetic Ride system and satellite navigation. Things to look out for include kerbed alloys as they can be expensive to repair or replace. The TTS and TDI weren't launched until mid-2008 - some two years after the standard car - so is only available on an 08-plate onwards

Selling

Any TT should sell quickly. Several options are offered, and most chosen should add something to the car's value but it may prove difficult to persuade potential buyers that things such as xenon headlamps and the short-shift gearbox offer any extra value. The TDI will always be popular thanks to its excellent economy and the TTS is the choice of enthusiasts.
