BMW 1-Series Convertible (08 on) - Review

If you're after a stylish and small convertible, BMW's 1-Series Convertible fits the bill perfectly. You get all the build quality and sophistication you expect from the German make, but in a neat soft-top package. Unlike many convertibles, including the 3-Series, this model sticks with a fabric hood which takes up less boot space when it's folded down. It may not be as quiet or secure as a metal-folding roof, but this 1-Series is still a great all-rounder. Good to drive, refined and classy - an added bonus for owners is that it even ticks a few boxes when it comes to being green and cost effective to run.

Buying new

BMWs used to have a reputation for being stingy with standard equipment and offering nearly everything as an option. Not so with the 1-Series - everything you'd expect to find on a car of this type and price is there. Key options that will make life on board more comfortable and add value when you sell are electric seats, sports seats, park distance control and satellite navigation. Bluetooth is a must if you make calls on the move, but won't add any much value - buyers will more than likely expect it to be fitted and may overlook your car if it is not.

Buying used

The 1-Series was launched in April 2008. Initially just the 120i and 125i engines were available; 118i, 118d, 120d, 123d and 135i were added to the range some weeks later, so if you’re looking at an early model, you may find that engine choice is limited. Two-thirds of cars on the used market are 118i and 125i models; others (especially the 123d diesel) are much rarer.

Selling

Considering its performance, the 1-Series Convertible is surprisingly cost-effective to run. That's good news for when you come to sell as buyers are increasingly drawn to models that won't hit them too hard in the pocket. The traditional desirability of the BMW should also mean that shifting your 1-Series Convertible is a breeze.
