BMW 1-Series Convertible (08 on) - Review

If you're after a stylish and small convertible, BMW's 1-Series Convertible fits the bill perfectly. You get all the build quality and sophistication you expect from the German make, but in a neat soft-top package. Unlike many convertibles, including the 3-Series, this model sticks with a fabric hood which takes up less boot space when it's folded down. It may not be as quiet or secure as a metal-folding roof, but this 1-Series is still a great all-rounder. Good to drive, refined and classy - an added bonus for owners is that it even ticks a few boxes when it comes to being green and cost effective to run.

Comfort

Head and legroom are both tight in the back - as you'd expect, so the two rear seats are best left for the children - they're only suitable for adults if the journey is very short. With the roof down the cabin environment is remarkably quiet and it's possible to hold a conversation at normal levels right up to motorway speeds. With the roof up there is a little wind rustle, though engine and road noise are kept well suppressed.

Practicality

The electric folding roof can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 30mph, which is ideal if you get caught in a rain shower in town. It looks elegant when it's folded away, concealed under a tonneau cover, but it's not quick - opening takes 22 seconds. Unlike some other small convertibles, the 1-Series uses a fabric roof, which means less space is taken up for the mechanism freeing up boot space. The boot itself isn't huge - it would suit the needs of a couple better than those of a small family.

Behind the wheel

The low-slung driving position is perfect for sporty driving, but also more than comfortable for long slogs. The dash is well laid out, the switches are logically placed and the interior oozes quality. Every car gets an engine stop/start button instead of twist key ignition - it gives the 1-Series a real sense of occasion. Once seated, it's easy to get comfortable with a reach and height-adjustable steering wheel and a multi-adjustable driver's seat as standard. BMW's iDrive system - which controls the satellite navigation, climate control and audio - is an option. Visibility is very good, even with the roof up, although the view out of the back is somewhat restricted by the canvas roof.
