BMW 3-Series Convertible (07 on) - Review

Review by David Ross on
Last Updated: 25 January 2010
The 3-Series Convertible is undoubtedly one of the most desirable models in the BMW line-up. It combines effortless elegance with everyday practicality and an exciting drive - in fact it is one of the finest drop-tops on sale today. The three-piece electric metal roof folds gracefully in 25 seconds and is a very compact design. That means with the roof up, it looks like a coupe, and it retains the smooth shape associated with previous 3-Series Cabriolets with the roof down - there's no 'bump' that has marred many other coupe-cabriolets. Further innovations such as heat-reflective leather upholstery and easy access to the luggage area show great attention to detail and add to the premium feel. Punchy engines and a high spec (all have at least SE trim) are the icing on the cake.

There are only two trim levels - SE and M Sport. Standard specification includes 17-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, heated electrically-adjustable wing mirrors, electric folding hardtop, electrically-adjustable front seats, climate control, electric windows, remote central locking, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, start/stop button, multi-function steering wheel controls, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, cruise control, ABS, brake pre-tensioning, traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, Xenon headlights, driver, front passenger and side airbags, two Isofix child seat anchor points, an immobiliser and Thatcham category 1 alarm, CD player with MP3 compatibility and USB stick integration. The M Sport adds an aerodynamic package, sports suspension, 18-inch light-alloy M Star-spoke wheels, sports seats, three-spoke M multi-function leather steering wheel, M Sport short-shift gearlever, brushed aluminium interior and M door sill coverings. In April 2009 a Highline trim was introduced. Available on SE and Sport models the SE Highline comes equipped as standard with Dakota leather, Bluetooth and 18-inch star-spoke light alloy wheels. An M Sport Highline model gains the same internal specification but with 19-inch M Double-spoke light alloy wheels. Revised models from early 2010 come with a Dakota leather interior as standard.
