BMW 3-Series Coupé (06 on) - Review

Review by Simon Harris on
Last Updated: 16 August 2011
As four-seat coupes go, few cars are as good looking or as enjoyable to drive as the BMW 3-Series Coupe - it's a classic design with a sleek yet understated air while inside it's beautifully finished with top grade materials. Only minor elements such as the door handles are carried over from the 3-Series saloon - the rest is bespoke to the Coupe. It's as good to drive as it looks too - the low slung driving position is perfect, the steering precise and responsive and body control excellent. It's also surprisingly practical with a good sized boot, although taller passengers may find the rear cramped. But when it comes to performance the 3-Series Coupe doesn't disappoint with some cracking engines - the 335i and 335d being the pick of the bunch. It was given a mild facelift in early 2010 along with more powerful and efficient engines.

Equipment

Like the 3-Series Convertible there are just two trim levels - SE and M Sport. Standard specification includes 17-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, heated electrically-adjustable wing mirrors, electrically-adjustable front seats, climate control, electric windows, remote central locking, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, start/stop button, multi-function steering wheel controls, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, cruise control, ABS, brake pre-tensioning, traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, xenon headlights, driver, front passenger and side airbags, two Isofix child seat anchor points, an immobiliser and Thatcham category 1 alarm, CD player with MP3 compatibility and USB stick integration. The M Sport adds an aerodynamic package, sports suspension, 18-inch light-alloy M Star-spoke wheels, sports seats, three-spoke M multi-function leather steering wheel, M Sport short-shift gearlever, brushed aluminium interior and M door sill coverings. In April 2009 a Highline trim was introduced. Available on SE and Sport models the SE Highline comes equipped as standard with Dakota leather, Bluetooth and 18-inch star-spoke light alloy wheels. An M Sport Highline model gains the same internal specification but with 19-inch M Double-spoke light alloy wheels. When the 3-Series Coupe was revised in 2010 Dakota leather was made standard on all models.
