BMW X1 (09 on) - Review Review by David Ross on 06 November 2009 Last Updated: 16 September 2011 BMW's fourth X model - the X1 - is also the smallest, yet retains much of the practicality and spaciousness of its larger counterparts. It's slightly shorter than a 3-Series which makes it easy to manoeuvre and park, especially in town, and yet still has impressive space for passengers in the back as well as a large and useful boot. It's available with either two-wheel drive (badged sDrive) or four-wheel drive (xDrive) while all the engines are impressively efficient and economical diesels, giving the X1 low running costs. There are criticisms, including some unusually below-par plastics in the cabin and a rather notchy gearshift on manual models, but decent levels of standard equipment, the usual BMW build quality and superb refinement make the X1 a sound choice. 4 out of 5 Other BMW reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Gallery Also Consider 4 out of 5 Volkswagen Tiguan (08 on) Neatly styled, robust interior, comfortable and safe on the move, off-road version available, BlueMotion versions available Alternatives are better value for money, 1.4 TSI engine feels sluggish Read full review 4 out of 5 Ford Kuga (08 on) Stylish looks, car-like handling, premium interior, refined and economical diesel Restricted choice of engines, limited off-road ability, no clever rear seat folding system Read full review 4 out of 5 Honda CR-V (07 on) Great in corners, unique styling, superb build quality, excellent diesel engine, refined Not really an off-road vehicle, firm ride, no seven seat option Read full review Find other 4x4 cars Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
