Chrysler Crossfire Coupé (03-08) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Crossfire is based on the old Mercedes SLK underneath. It manages to outdo the Audi TT in the look-at-me stakes and it uses some interesting design cues - on the outside at least. It's let down by the interior though, particularly the naff silver plastic trim and cramped driving position. It's not involving to drive either but the V6 engine offers decent pace and works well with the auto gearbox.

Comfort

The price you pay for those looks is a lack of interior space. There are no rear seats and not even much in the way of room to recline the front chairs without sacrificing all the legroom. The seats themselves are built for cushioning rather than support, which is noticeable, not only on twisting roads, but also longer journeys. The ride can be very poor over rough surfaces so driving the Crossfire is rarely a relaxing or quiet experience with road and engine noise constant intrusions.

Practicality

The boot is as small as you'd expect in a two-seat roadster and with 215 litres of space it's only any good for a few bags of shopping or a weekend bag. It's slightly larger than a Mercedes SLK but smaller than the Audi TT while the high lip and narrow opening make it tricky to access. Inside there's a lack of stowage too with narrow door pockets and one small central tray behind the handbrake.

Behind the wheel

If you're over six foot tall you may find the seat doesn't go back far enough to give you a comfortable driving position, although headroom is not a problem. What is of more concern is the cheap looking interior which houses plenty of silver plastic when rivals offer aluminium. The switches feel a little on the flimsy side and general build quality isn't up to the standard of similarly priced coupes. Visibility, especially out the back, is severely limited.
