Daihatsu YRV (01-04) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The YRV is billed as a Young Recreational Vehicle - a direct rival to the Nissan Micra and Suzuki Ignis. It's cheap to own, easy to drive and offers a similar package to the Toyota Yaris (with which it shares an engine) for a cheaper price.

Performance

1.3 Turbo 130 sounds good, but is restricted by a jerky four-speed auto gearbox and there's also a version that develops a more civilised 85 bhp which is still lively and responsive. The 50 bhp 1.3 lacks power, but are fine for town driving. Four-wheel-drive 4-trak models sap performance and fuel economy.

Handling

Steering is light - a blessing for trouble-free parking, but it lacks feedback on the road. Test it over some backroads and the body rolls considerably. Ride is poor on all models, especially so on tuned 130 models.
