Ferrari 612 (04-10) - Review

Catch mention of the name Ferrari and it's difficult not to conjure up images of voluptuous supercars. But in fact the firm also has a long tradition of producing practical GT cars like the 612 Scaglietti. Successor to the popular 456, the much faster 612 hasn't had the easiest of rides from critics since its introduction in 2004, mostly due to its rather awkward styling. Get past the aesthetic issues though, and there's much to like. Alternatives like the Aston DB9 and Bentley Continental GT are two plus twos rather than actual four-seaters like the 612. The mighty Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG probably comes closest in terms of space, price and performance although it lacks the kudos of the Italian coupé.

Running costs

It falls into the most expensive insurance group, needs a minor service at 6250 miles and major one 6250 miles later while managing just 13mpg. Put in the context of other exotic cars, this sort of expense is probably only slightly worse than average, rather than exceptionally bad. What you might want to bear in mind is that Ferrari's big four-seat coupes have never enjoyed the same resistance to depreciation as their two-seat siblings.

Emissions summary

Little surprise that the 612 scores miserably on the eco front. With emissions of 470g/km CO2, its no friend to the environment, although this is typical of a car delivering this kind of performance. It's also very thirsty, averaging a mere 14mpg.
