Since 2004 Fiat has been doing what it does best - producing small cars whose appeal is in their character and value. Following the success of the Panda and Grande Punto, the 500 is another small car. However, this one unashamedly appeals to the emotions and is a modern interpretation of a classic small Fiat from the past. The 500 echoes the design of the rear-engined original, although is built to modern standards, and is very safe. Easy to drive and available with a host of customisation options, the little Fiat is a stylish small car with plenty of characterful.

Performance

Small cars are meant to be nimble enough to keep up with traffic around town and all versions of the 500 should perform this task well. Although the 1.4-litre petrol engine with 100bhp sounds as though it would be pretty lively, it does take a lot of work to get the best out of it. Maximum pulling power is developed high up the rev range and the six speed gearbox needs working to keep the engine keen. Even gentle uphill gradients need a downshift or two, but once the engine is above 4000rpm, it seems fairly quick. The gearchange is precise and the clutch is light making it easy to drive in traffic. 1.4-litre versions of the 500 come with a sport button which sharpens the throttle response (and increases the steering effort needed, to improve feel). The 75bhp 1.3-litre Multijet is the most economical engine with 67mpg achievable, plus it offers decent in-gear pace.

Handling

While it might not be as pin-sharp as a MINI on the road, the 500 is certainly nimble and able to be hustled through gaps in traffic. It is composed out of town on country roads, with good body control, although the steering has a slightly artificial feel to it. The ride is firm but the 500 also grips quite well even when travelling at slightly higher speeds than would be typical for most owners. Stability control is a standard feature on 1.4-litre models and optional on the rest of the range. Steering on all models is fitted with Fiat's Dualdrive system, which, when activated decreases the resistance of the wheel making turning it even easier. This function disables above 44mph.
