Fiat Coupé (95-00) - Review

For striking and timeless looks, few cars can match the wonderfully styled Fiat Coupe. Well proportioned and athletic it has aged particularly well and still looks fresh despite first being introduced in 1995. It's available with a choice of engines but it's the five-cylinder turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre (badged 20v) that is the most sought after, particularly by enthusiasts. With keen handling and a smooth ride the Coupe is a good everyday car with two useful rear seats and a good-sized boot. However reliability can be a problem, especially electrical niggles, while the interior isn't particularly well screwed together.

Comfort

Despite its small dimensions, the Coupe can carry four-people, although not if they're all six-footers. However there's decent room in the back for a small coupe and the two seats are certainly useable for children. The ride is good too, although engine and road noise are intrusive at motorway speeds. Air conditioning became standard on all models from August 1999.

Practicality

Thanks to a decent-sized boot and a large opening, the Coupe can carry a surprising amount of luggage or shopping and the L-shaped boot means access is easy. There's not much storage up front though with narrow door pockets, a small glovebox and hardly any cubby holes. The turning circle is poor too, which makes it tricky to manoeuvre in town.

Behind the wheel

The cabin is dominated by the body-coloured strip that starts at the doors and spans the dashboard and instrument dials. It's especially effective and distinct on bright coloured cars such as yellow or red and brightens up the otherwise dark interior. Quality isn't great though and nor is the finish - it doesn't take long for cars to develop annoying squeaks and rattles while the heavy and wide doors are a pain in tight car parks. The driving position isn't ideal either, but there is adequate adjustment of the seat and wheel for most drivers to get comfortable.
