Fiat Doblo (01-10) - Review

The Doblo was originally launched with two engines - a 1.2-litre petrol with 65bhp and a 1.9 D with 63bhp. Both engines are slow though - the 1.2-litre lacks power while the diesel doesn't have a turbo, so feels very sluggish and takes 20.9 seconds to got from 0-62mph while both only manage a top speed of 88mph. The diesel isn't even especially economical, managing a mediocre 39mpg. In February 2002 the far superior 1.9-litre JTD diesel with 100bhp was introduced but in April 2004 it was replaced by a slightly more powerful 105bhp version which was also more economical (fuel consumption improved from 44mpg to 49mpg) and could manage the 0-62mph benchmark in 12.4 seconds. At the same time the 1.3-litre MultiJet was introduced to replace the 1.9D. Although not quick (0-62mph takes 16 seconds), the 70bhp unit is smooth enough and very frugal with 51mpg achievable.

The Doblo isn't a particularly rewarding car to drive but it is safe and more sophisticated than the van-like appearance would suggest. The steering lacks feel and weight but is responsive enough and it corners with minimal fuss and decent body control for a car so tall. The ride is exceptionally good and deals well with rough roads so even at higher speeds the Doblo feels surefooted and more refined than alternatives like the Citroen Berlingo.
