Fiat Punto Evo (10 on) - Review

Review by David Ross on
It has a new name and new engines, but the Punto Evo is essentially a facelift of the Grande Punto - a car which has helped to improve Fiat's reputation for quality and reliability. There are some subtle changes to the exterior, including a new front end akin to the Fiat 500 while there are substantial upgrades to the interior with a new dashboard, instrument dials and a sleek stereo. However the biggest advances come under the bonnet thanks to new petrol and diesel engines that deliver more power along with improvements in economy and CO2 emissions. All models come with an automatic engine stop/start system too. Improvements in refinement and soundproofing make it quieter on the move, but the overly firm ride detracts from overall comfort. However, the Punto Evo is still a great value small car with plenty of standard equipment and low running costs.

Equipment

There are five trim levels - Active, Dynamic, Eleganza, GP and Sporting, with the latter two designed for a more sporty drive and the others focused on comfort. Entry-level Active models come with steel wheels, electric front windows, remote central locking, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, a CD stereo with steering wheel-mounted controls and Blue&Me connectivity. The Dynamic adds a leather trimmed steering wheel, leather gear lever, air conditioning, split folding rear seats and body-coloured door handles while the Eleganza has metallic bumper inserts, 16-inch alloy wheels, interior ambient lighting, cruise control, rear parking sensors, rain sensitive wipers, climate control and ESP stability control. The more sporty GP comes with a rear spoiler, dark tinted headlights and front foglights but doesn't get the climate control of the Eleganza, instead having air conditioning. The Sporting gets a chrome exhaust pipe, side skirts, 17-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, cruise control, air conditioning and ESP stability control. Options include a Blue&Me TomTom portable sat nav which sits in a slot on the dashboard and integrates with the on-board computer. Mobile phones, the sound system, trip computer and navigation can all be controlled via the 4.3-inch touch screen.
