Ford Fiesta (95-99) - Review

The extensively revised Fiesta Mk 4 put the fun back into functional during the mid-1990s. It was as good to drive as any rival supermini and still looks fairly modern, with curvy, youthful styling, though it’s less radical than its funky little sister, the Ka. Ford's bestseller got a fresh lease of life in the form of 16-valve Zetec engines, improved suspension and handling, good security measures and modern safety features. If you add in keen pricing, this late 90s Fiesta now looks like a very canny budget supermini choice.

Comfort

The Mk 4's ride quality was vastly improved over previous generations and interior noise levels have been dampened down too. However, as with most small cars of this age, there is limited headroom, while lengthy journeys can be a nightmare – especially for taller drivers or adult passengers in the rear. The seats are reasonably comfortable, although they can sag over time, making the interior look a little tatty and misshapen. Overall, the comfort levels are bearable over short distances, but any longer than a couple of hours in the Fiesta are tedious and painful.

Practicality

The Fiesta is ideally suited to inner city driving and easily manoeuvrable through congested traffic. Its small, compact design does mean that it can be a little awkward to access the back seats – especially on the three-door models – but there should be enough room in the rear for children. The Fiesta’s restricted luggage capacity will prevent you from getting too much shopping or luggage in the boot, although extra space can be bestowed by removing the carpeted parcel shelf and folding rear seats.

Behind the wheel

The Fiesta’s dashboard looks cheaply styled and the plastic finishing is a touch clumsy, though it is pleasantly ergonomic, with everything within touching distance. Otherwise, the view of the road is adequate, the driver’s seat is fully height adjustable - although the steering wheel position cannot be changed – and there are no major blind spots to speak of. The quality level is generally acceptable, as with most Fords, and you shouldn’t be too disappointed by the rather bland interior design.
