Ford Focus Estate (05-11) - Review Review by Simon Harris on 15 February 2006 Last Updated: 16 December 2008 As small estates go, the Focus is often overlooked in favour of more stylish models. Which is a real shame as it makes a great car for load lugging thanks to a excellent boot space and a wide, long load area. Of course being a Ford it is also great to drive and loses none of the handling prowess of the Focus hatchback, with the same responsive steering and good body control. With supple suspension it also rides well, even with a full load on board and there's decent rear passenger space too. A great range of engines is available, our pick being the excellent TDCi units, which offer a blend of punchy performance and impressive fuel economy. The model was facelifted in January 2008 with sharper looks and improved interior quality while a low emissions ECOnetic version was also available for the first time. In 2009 the eco version was improved to lowering emissions and averaging 70mpg. 4 out of 5 Other Ford reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 4 out of 5 Comfort The cabin of the Focus feels spacious and comfortable and there is easily room enough for five adults with good head and legroom - even in the rear. It's a refined environment in which to travel, especially on long journeys with limited engine and road noise. However, both estate version of the Vauxhall Astra and Renault Megane have a longer wheelbase, offering generous legroom for rear occupants. The Focus can't quite match them for rear passenger space. View full gallery 4.5 out of 5 Practicality The boxy rear end of the Focus estate won't win many style awards, but what it does mean is plenty of boot space and a large, square load area. With the rear seats in place there's 482 litres of space - that's almost 100 litres more than the hatchback. Folding the rear seats down could be easier though - there are no clever fold flat mechanisms here - instead you have to flip up the seat base and fold down the backs if you want something resembling a flat floor. Even then it isn't totally flat and the flipped up bases eat into the overall boot length. However the boot floor is wide and the large tailgate opening means you can easily transport bulky or boxy items. Up front there are numerous little storage areas including a front armrest with a storage compartment underneath. Get a Ford Focus Estate valuation View full gallery How does the boot space compare? The appearance of the interior is much improved on facelifted cars and shows more attention to detail - particularly around the instruments. The driving position offers plenty of adjustment, especially if the car has electrically adjustable seats while the variable assistance power steering makes for easy parking and plenty of feedback on the move View full gallery Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
